Is there a difference in lengths of dip sticks between the ones that sit straight in the block and those used with the plastic tube? - If so what is it?

None sit straight in the block. They either use the plastic or steel tube.
Length differences I'm not too sure

Got the tube  just thought the dip stick looked a little 'short' and thought maybe it went straight in the block.

????

803, 850, 950 & 997 A series engines, the dip stick goes straight into the block with a small felt seal on the end of the dip stick
A+ Engines also have the dip stick going straight into the block, they have a rubber seal.

Yes, all the pre A+ blocks do use / need a tube, however the A+ do not use any tubes, the dip stick goes staight in to the block. The Dip Sicks for the A+ are also little different at the seal (shape of it).

well there you go. Learn something everyday. I have never had any experience with A+ engines and with 803s, 950s (mini engines? No) 850s & 997s well I have never bothered to look. :)
