A while ago I fitted a new clutch which unfortunately is now slipping.

Having pulled it apart I find the primary gear seal has been falling down on the job and is letting oil onto the clutch plate.

I also find that the oil thrower ring (I think that's what it is - because I can't see it has any other function??) is loose. Previously it has seemed to be an integral part of the gear but now I can slide it off.

If you look at a photo of a primary gear in any of the catalogues you can see a piece that sits between the main helical gear and the little oil holes. This is what has come loose.

I also notice that the straight cut gears don't seem to have this piece.

My questions are:

Do I need it?

If yes, can I reattach it with metal cement/super glue?? (I'm assuming it has something to do with the oil leak??)

Cheers, Ian

The Oil Seal will certainly do it's job better if the oil flinger ring is in place, however it sounds like the bushing and / or thrust washer in your primary gear might want looking at as the symptoms that you described could have these as a root cause. It would not sugest gluing the ring back in place, but carefully 'tapping it' with a hammer, on the flat to shrink it a little in size to again make it a interferance fit. You should have to heat it (in oil - don't use a direst flame) to get it back on.

Did you also get clutch shudder?

I would bet 1/2 the Minis on the road no longer have a slinger on it.
I have run with and without over the years, have not seen any difference.
Half my stash of primary gears are missing one.

Before i received the answers above I asked a mate who builds (pretty good) speedway cars.

He recommended the tap it flat method ... + a bit of metal cement... which is what i did.

The bushings look great and the clearance is spot on so we shall suck it and see.

I really can't see that the flinger does much - but its been there for ages so we won't throw it away just yet.

I even have the correct tools this time to install the seal.... beats a bit of wood and a hammer.

Thanks guys,

Ian

Thanks for your feedback there Ian. I hear what you say, that's 8) but there is always a reason for these 'things' not working as they should.

Was there any evidence of the flinger (slinger) damaging the seal? Was there any evidence of abnornal freting of the flywheel on the tail of the crank? (There always is some)
