But on pulling them apart I realised the switch bases have a flat side that prevents them being the other way around in the metal panel. They would both end up upside down if I swapped them.

My late 68 build S has the same switch setup as yours. My handbook TP757e 8/68 shows the switches the wrong way for my Cooper S as well.
IIRC my first S, circa 1966, had the switches arranged as per the handbook but it had Lucas UK self parking wipers. When my 68 S was new I tried to swap them around to match the book as I thought they had been installed incorrectly. But as you have discovered you cant do it because of the locating flats on the switches unless you put the wiper switch in upside down. The light switch IIRC can be installed either way and still work properly, ie - OFF is up. The wiper switch will have down as OFF.
I think it MAY be due to the fact that from approx 1968 Minis with self parking wipers used Lucas Australia wiper motors and these use regenerative braking to park the wipers and a different switch is required. Perhaps the handbook sketch was changed for the Mini Deluxe and overlooked for the S.
Vans and base model Minis didn't have self parking wipers and use a different wiper switch. I don't know if these used UK or Australian Lucas wipers.

Yep my 70 `matic was like this, I didn't like it so filed the flat out and put them back where IMO they should be.

I'm interested to know your reasoning is behind that, don't you think it makes more sense to have the wiper next to the washer and easier to reach.

I was only looking at swapping them to make it "correct".

I noticed a while back the positions of the wiper and headlight switch in my late 68 Mk1 Cooper S seemed to be around the wrong way. My car has... Heater/Lights/Ign/Wiper/Choke Handbook says for Cooper S it should be... Heater/Wiper/Ign/Lights/Choke and for Deluxe.. Heater/Lights/Ign/Wiper/Washer and for Minor/Van Heater/Wiper/Ign/Lights/Washer No problem I'll swap them around. But on pulling them apart I realised the switch bases have a flat side that prevents them being the other way around in the metal panel. They would both end up upside down if I swapped them. What's the story? Do I have a panel and or switches from a deluxe perhaps?

My deluxe has random pull switch/wipers/ignition/lights/choke. No idea if its original or not, but most of the car is. So i imagine it would be.

I'm using 757e However they both still show the same layout for the Cooper S except that the washer is in an odd spot in your copy. (a mistake??) But yes the layout for the Deluxe in your book is different. My book shows them round the other way (is that a mistake!?) Did they mix up left hand drive diagrams in some of the handbooks which would explain the washer pump on the left in your book? But I still can't put my switches in the correct positions. I also just looked at the diagram in the Mini King Catalogue. The flats in the holes of the panels are toward the outside but on my panel they are toward the inside. And they only list one panel. my book.....

As far as I know the light switch was always on the right on all the cars to avoid confusion. The washers on the Cooper S in my book do look wrong but I wonder if it may have been correct at one stage.

So I wonder is the diagram in my book showing the deluxe with the lights on the left is a mistake? Is there anyone out there with the light switch on the left like me?

Also the key is the right way around and also the heater and choke holes are angled slightly so they come out straight. It's funny because I had a Minimatic and I think was like this because I seem to remember you could pump the washer and work the switch one handed.

I actually think that setup makes more sense with the wiper switch nearer the washer and also closer at hand for intermittent use in drizzle.

I'm planning to change Ms Plum's over to make the wipers closer to the driver as my "short arsed" partner can't reach to the other side of the key
