Post subject:  1978 Leyland Mini Sunshine

Hello all!

I got my hands on a Genuine Leyland Sunshine and my husband and I are 80% in wire-brushing her back to bare metal, getting all that nasty stuff they call rust out.... I have big plans for her and it's well on its way :)

I 'm not a master when it comes to mini's, so if there are any specifics that people want to share, please do so here

Also, I am trying to find the Sunshine register, I heard there is one out there but I can't locate it...?!?

I also have a sunshine, definately get a back issue of 'the mini experience' that features Chris Zerial's car. Be aware though that most mini's I have seen that claim to be sunshines arn't...

78 is definately the right year though (or december 77)

Hi, I had my eyes on one recently too, but it's too much of a basket case. I was told that two sure fire ways of telling if the car is a genuine 'sunshine' is it must have the button on the aluminum switch panel for the sun roof and it must also have a roof mounted antenna for the radio.

Some ways to tell from another sunshine post:

The main point is the sunroof must be the right one. There is a round button on the dash next to the headlight switch, it is for the vacuum seal for the sunroof.

Issue 7 of The Mini Experience

Only 360 made, so you decide if it's rare enough to go for

As stated, it was effectively a Mini S with a Sunroof, but it had to be the Autosun Sportsroof with the vacuum activated seal. There should be the little button on the switch panel, which had "Sportsroof Release" printed on it (although not all of them had the words printed on, and some of the buttons have been replaced over time).

The Mini Sunshine was released in October 1977, so Compliance Plates shoukld be from around this period. Chris Zerial's is dated 12/77.

The Mini Sunshine also came with the centre-mounted roof aerial, tinted windows and the prismatic "Sunshine" decals on the rear quarters. All other items on the car were either standard on the Mini S or available as options on any Mini sedan of the period.

Cheers,
Watto.

Check and check, my girl has all of the above :D

WOW! I didn't realise how helpful everyone would be...

Does anyone know how much they are actually worth? roughly...?
Its just that whenever I tell an enthusiast what I have, their eyes light up like Christmas.... :)

I think I just stumbled upon beginners luck with finding her!

And for spare parts like chromed rubbers, side mirrors, body panels etc, who it the least rip-off online? I have been told that <MOD EDIT> Unsubstantiated claims against a business. Please refer ausmini rule 4 is a huge rip off...?

Thanks again!!!!

Hi Kristy,

To upload an image read through this thread. It is usually pretty good. You need to sign up to photobucket or imageshack first thought (among others).

As for what it is worth, how long is a piece of string? It depends on alot of things and at the end of the day a fair few on here would say "what ever someone is willing to pay".

As for me I'd say anywhere between $1,500 to $11,000 for me (which is covering anything really from a rust heap up to one which is pretty nice with all the right bits etc).

Ypu are lucky in Wagga that you have the old school garage for parts and services and the owner Tim is a mini nut, they also have a club in Wagga that is really active and helpful

Yeah it was on ebay for $3000 but i waited until the end of the listing and made him an offer and picked it up for $1800

Glad I waited out cos I doubted the authenticity at forst, but it has turned out to be a real diamond in the rough...
