I have read some info on these cars and would like to ask a few questions

I have posted this here as its kinda related to mini's

I have been told they are rare and I guess its true cause I haven’t
seen any for sale.

Were they a good car for their time?

How much would one be worth today in an alright condition
4-cylinder auto?

There's a thread on Marina's down in other makes , http://www.ausmini.com/forums/viewtopic ... sc&start=0 , basically they were an alright car for mum/grannie to go shopping in but the suspension (closely related to the Morris Minor suspension from memory) let everything down handling wise if you wanted to have a play ....

I have a marina in the front yard that I acquired. I was going to restore it because although it was not a fantastic car in its own right, it was a part of Australian motoring history.

This car is in fairly good condition an we drove it here. Parked it and it hasn't been touched in three years.

I wont get to it due to other commitments. Talk to me by PM - I would rather see it go to a home than the crusher - I wont want a lot for it.

mates dad still owns a good condition marina, has had it for as long as i can remember, was surprised at how much of the car was the same as my leyland mini. Interior door handles, dash, hand brake, lots of the same parts.

I was hoping that Leyland would drop the P76 motor into the 2 door job, but sadly it never happened

Marinas here all got the OHC E (?) series donk. Elsewhere in the word (including UnZud) they had the 1275 A series.

got one for $50 once, swapped it for a fuel pump for my rotary , think i won on that deal.

I read that they experimented with a prototype to take on Bathurst once.
Don't know any details though.

They did fit the P76 motor to the Marina. They sold lots of them.

Oh hang on, you mean the P76 V8. No they didn't sell any of them.

Go have a read of the other thread in other makes , there is a magazine scan there now of the V6 Marina prototype

There was an homologation special P76 for bathurst with the engine stroked to 5L, LSD, 5 sp gearbox and a few other goodies - might have even had 4 wheel discs?

It ran in a sports sedan race at Oran Park as a leyland special but never made it to Bathurst as far as I know. There were a number of them but not sure how many. I know where there is one that has been restored but not yet fully put back together. Been that way for 5 years or so now, and will be another 5 at least before it is finished I reckon.

The son of the owner of Lynx engineering (I cant remember his name) ran a two door marina division 2 sports sedan fitted with an alloy V8 out of a rover.

It was reportedly a P76 motor out the back door of Leyland and caused a bit of CAMS issue at the time.

It was quick in a straight line but had many chassis design issues. It used to lift the inside front wheel about 18 inches off the ground in a corner.

Best described as an enthusiastic car in enthusiastic hands.

Malta was another Commonwealth country that had a Car assembly for BMC cars which operated between 1972 and 1986. I tried to get some info about the operation of this Car assembly for a 'Magazine article' and even met the original Directors of the company called "Malta Car Assembly Co. Ltd". Unfortunately They were very unhelpful about giving out information about anything. They just gave me a bit of rough info to sort of get rid of me which I found out that most of it was not true. Perhaps they thought I was an investigator from the "Taxation Dept" or something. They must have got a bit worried getting asked all these questions by someone with an Aussie Maltese Accent. These days my spoken Maltese gets interrupted by English words as my Maltese vocabulary is not the same as it was 30 years ago when I left Malta. I got more and better info about the Factory's happenings from people I know and used to work there. There they produced Mini, Morris 1100, Triumph Herald, Triumph 1300s and a Morris Marine DIESEL. From memory it had the B series 1500 diesel. It was a very successful car in the European market. In Malta there are still a few of these running around the island. I was in Malta in July 09 and I actually took some pics of one Marina and a Triumph 1300 I came across. They even had a "Built in Malta" badge on them with the Maltese cross. Unfortunately due to Malta being part of the EU they have many ristrictions about emissions and cars get tested each year and if they fail they get crushed. Unless you find someone that does the testing who has a bit of respect for older cars.
