My mini has a chain rattling sound.

The rattling sound comes in and gets quite loud when you accelerate normally and when accelerating from coasting.

There is no rattling sound when coasting or when accelerating hard from coasting .

There is no rattling sound when idling or revving the motor while stationery.

I have checked the grill,bonnet and radiator shroud without success.



Any ideas?

Sounds like the timing chain.

Is the engine and 'A' or 'A+' ?

How many miles since service or rebuild?

Engine size? - 998, 1098, 1275 or later model from Rover etc?

how about top engine steady bush's and engine mounts, motor rocking under load and something touching bulk head. If its the timing chain you can hearit rattling while idling.

Id agree with engine/gearbox steadies. Are you sure the rattle isnt in your gearstick? If its a remote change its very common.

timing chain would rattle when stationary and revving the motor.

engine steadys wouldnt be enough play to cause a large rattle on acceleration.

im going to take a guess at CV joints. As they get worse they will rattle more.

Could also be a timing issue . . . engine "pinking" (aka. pinging)

Good one Scott, I would say your correct.

Check the timing and make sure its not over advancing and use better fuel, std unleaded (91) isnt good for a mini engine, I reccomend using premium (98). These two suggestions will hopefully fix your problem.
