Post subject:  The gasket thing between rear hub & drum?

I've pulled apart my rear subframe & brakes and saw that there is a really thin gasket type of material between the inside of the rear drum and the hub assembly (I'd say to stop the two from rusting together)

Is there a name for this (and part number?) and are they readily available? I can't find any reference to it in the couple of parts catalogues I have.

Yes, its just a thin paper gasket. They were fitted at the factory to stop the brake drum sticking/rusting to the hub. Most cars these days dont have them fitted, I dont think anyone still makes them and there not really required. They did the same with wheel cylinders too, often when you buy a new wheel cylinder it will come with a gasket, most people dont know what there for a throw them in the bin.

Hi mearcat :)

I actually like them personally, they make it that little bit easier to get apart sometimes after they've been sitting for'a while.

But thats just me

I normally just make a new one out of paper, does the job, stops them sticking.

Interested to hear from others and what they think.

If a DIY "gasket" is the only option, I think a wax-type paper would be the best way to go. It would go a long way in repelling moisture (and stop promoting rust) between the two items.

Wax-paper wouldn't last too long, since the drums do get quite warm. Gasket Paper is very readily available and in different thicknesses. Just normal paper would defete the purpose (maybe make it worse  ).
