A question for the masses.

What (if any) differences are there between a Morris and an Austin motor. I'm talking about english motors here. I have just removed the motor from my '63 Countryman and I'm unsure whether it is the original motor or not. It has no normal engine number (8S prefix) and a Morris rocker cover. Given how easy it is to change the rocker cover I was just wondering if there is any other differences in the two power plants.

Also its an 850 with a magic wand gearbox.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers,

All A series engines were made in the Austin factory at longbridge. The main difference between a Austin badged and a Morris Badged 850 engine is the name plate on the rocker cover, some engine numbers had 8A (A for austin) or 8M (M for morris) later engines had 8AM to make it simple. The only other difference I can think of is very early Morris badged engines, they had a 4 blade fan that was painted red, not yellow like the Austins and later types.

Why not just buy a bmh certificate to see whether its the right engine?

I have BMH certificate for that car but the engine number doesn't match. The engine number in it does not relate to any factory identification so I can only assume it is a re-issued number from the police, road authority etc.

I was just curious as to whether there was any differences between Morrie and Austin engines apart from the numbers and rocker covers and it appears (from 850man) that there is not.

Cheers,

Cheers,

If there is a P on the end it's an Oz number issued by the fuzz.

eg my old Mk1 S motor- which was in a `71 GT.
N891501P

N= NSW
89 = year issued
1501 = number sequence issued in that year
P = fuzz. 8)

All states used this system, only the state prefix alters.
Q = Qld, V = Vic, etc.
