| Post subject: | some wiring questions |
hi guys, i'm currently re-wiring a friend's '65 morris mini deluxe with an EZ-wiring 12 circuit harness, and so far so good but i have a couple of specific questions which relate to a few electrical components. i do have a copy of the factory wiring diagram but things would go much quicker if i could get some help with these things. any help would be greatly appreciated: 1. wiper motor. there are three separate spade terminals at the base of the wiper motor (i've marked them on the photo with a blue, yellow, and green arrow respectively). after reading the factory wiring diagram, it seems that one terminal needs to connect to ground, one terminal needs to connect to 12v (fused), and one terminal needs to connect to the wiper switch. does anyone know which terminals go to where?
2. the alternator. As i am generally unfamiliar with mini's, i am not sure if this alternator is an externally or internally regulated unit. my guess is that it is internally regulated as i cannot find an external regulator anywhere in the engine bay or under the dash. The alternator was originally connected with two wires (shown with a blue and a yellow arrow in the picture below - central terminal was disconnected). can anyone please let me know which one is the D+ (ign 12v) terminal, and which one is the battery + wire?
3. headlight switch. there seem to be 5 (?) terminals on the headlight switch. at the moment i have not removed it from the dash panel as i would like to keep it there if possible. can anyone please let me know what terminal (coloured arrow) needs what (ie. constant 12v, dimmer switch connection, etc) on the headlight switch? the factory wiring diagram is not helpful at all because i cannot see any numbered terminals on the hl switch itself. if i have counted incorrectly and there are more/less than 5 terminals, please let me know.
4. wiper switch. i'm also wondering what needs to connect to what terminal at the wiper switch, but i'm hoping that once i understand the headlight switch i will probably figure out the wiper switch (as they appear to be very similar in design). if anyone could help out i would very much appreciate it, however. the wiper switch is on the far left of the above picture, and seems to have 4 (?) terminals. 5. headlights/front turn signals. i have this more or less sorted but in my work today i found some extra wires that were not in the factory wiring diagram. they were: - red (one at each side) - black (one at each side) there are no additional lights in this mini so i am a bit lost as to what is going on. i am loosely assuming that someone in the past has added a ground wire to each of the headlight sockets, so i will try grounding the black wires temporarily when the car has juice again, but if anyone might know what either of these wires might be doing i would love to hear it in advance. that's enough for now, thank you very much for any help. cheers charles |

Hi Charles, with the alternator it has 3 terminals, 2 large(battery positive) and 1 small(warning light). It only needs 1 positive as they are linked internally, it is internally regulated aswell. As for the wipers, hook up power and test with a test light. Headlight switch hook up power and use a test light to find each circuit. Unless you can find the actual positions for the wires. Try that |

great news about the alternator, thanks! i'll hook up battery 12v to one of the large terminals, and then my ignition 12v to the small terminal. i may even wire in a warning globe into that circuit for the hell of it. i was afraid you'd say that about the switches/wiper motor thanks again cheers |

This may help with the wiper motor....
Green on terminal 2 runs to the fuse box. Green and Black on terminal 1 runs to the switch. Black runs to earth. Here is a wiring diagram to suit that wiper motor. (I made them big so that you can read the fineprint) http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb2/britishmotorcorporation/Cooper%20S/aWiringharnessDeluxe01Big.jpg And you need this one for the wire colour code... http://i207.photobucket.com/albums/bb2/britishmotorcorporation/Cooper%20S/aWiringharnessDeluxe02.jpg |

hello again, if anyone cares to refer back to this one day, the switch connections are as follows:
the only thing to keep in mind is that the wiper switch is mounted upside down (as can be seen in the earlier picture), so terminal 1 is actually on the bottom. cheers |
