I would like to put a better alternator in my car.

Ive ordered a UHF, and i have just installed a relay for a single spot lamp, and will be installing relays for headlamps, which eventually i would like to convert to halogens.

Currently got a standard 75 Lucas alternator, any suggestions on a higher wattage version OR a conversion job from another vehicle.

Fitting alternators from other cars is rather simple, just an issue of lining up the pulleys and making the brackets fit but I don't think their are any kits available. If you can't do the installation yourself it's probably easier to simply upgrade to a mini alt with 85 watts, their are plenty available from many many different suppliers.

Talk to Andrew at MiniSport since you're in Adelaide, they fixed me up with a Rover (I think) 65A alternator at a good price which was a bolt-on replacement, no mods necessary at all. The pulley is also a good solid steel item, not the pressed tin on some so it's unlikely to wear.

I'm not running a huge load, just 55/60W H4 halogens on relays, 55W spots (again on a relay), a small head unit, heater fan, etc. This alt is probably overkill for my current needs (no pun intended) but gives me heaps of headroom for extras later if need be.

ill check it out, and see what steve at miniworx can sell me as well.

higher wattage and ampage the betterer. hence thinking about new car swapover, but was wondering what would be least hassle to convert.

Nissan Pulsar are quite easy to fit. I'm running one in MR BN, but really it's a bit overkill

The one I'm going to fit to my next mini will be a Suzuki Swift alternator.
Rated at either 45A or 55A, they are ultra reliable, extremely compact at 110mm diameter and weigh two fifths of fark all (0.95kg less than a mini)
Image

They are a Nippon Denso unit, also fitted to Daihatsu, Kubota, Honda etc.
Note that the Kubota ones are even smaller at 80mm but only 25A, and some Honda ones are bigger.

Is that Swift one from a current model?

Nope. From the old Mk 1/2/3 from the mid 80s to 90s.
Most have the flat multi-V pulleys. so you have to swap them over.
Can be picked up second hand for about $35 from ebay or redlinegti.com, but I happen to have a couple lying around.

hi all, sorry for the thread mining but im fitting one of these to my 1160 clubby. All finished except for the wiring of which i have a few q's about.

I understand the wire from the big terminal to the solenoid, and a positive switched feed from the IGN (will a tap of the coil feed be okay?), but im not sure about the ign light. on a diagram i have it says alt-light-fuse box

Does that mean its a non switched positive or does it go alt-light-earth?

Im 99% sure its alt-light-fusebox+ I just want to check before i spin it over tommorrow.

Also, I came up with what i think is a reasonable solution to the problem of loading the water pump tab. Its pretty much a length of 3/8 unc allthread and nuts/washers that uses the old alt mount to stop the waterpump tab from flexing/snaping off. Ill put up a pic later on.

Cheers,
Jeff
