I've been offered a couple of bottles of castrol 10-60 full synthetic for a good price (50 the pair ). Sitting on a mates shelf not to be used, so I will get them instead.

I'll probably use them in my other Subaru Forester, but the question is if they might be worth looking at for the mini as a one off opportunity?

The product description states it is suitable for "older technology sports cars and luxury sedans" whatever car model that is supposed to define....

Castrol Oz don't define it any better.. http://www.tds.castrol.com.au/pdf%5C858 ... 200808.pdf

There have been reports that some synthetics work quite well in a Mini. I don't know which ones. Might have to do a search through some UK web sites. If this one has been recommend as being suitable for older cars then it is likely to be mini friendly.

I've heard others talk of the zinc levels in the modern oils being too low for a mini's old tech cam arrangement, so it's only the lack of additives that are of concern. Viscosity doesn't seem to be a problem as far as I can understand with this oil.

The foz would be impressed! Much like buying the wife flowers....but not flowers from Coles...she's onto that one and apparently they don't count as being real flowers cos they smell like the fresh fruit and veg section...fussy!

They reccommend synthetic oil in the later engines in the UK.
Did manufacturing tolerances see any improvement between 59 and 99 for this to only apply to the later engines?

Manufacturing tolerances got worse.
Example- the late Rover gearboxes were thrown together with whatever thrust washers they could find. Lots of probs with them in UK.
