Hi guys just wondering if its possible to buy Rubber gaskets for door hinges etc.... instead of the useless paper ones! |

Hey brett, I have used both paper and rubber gaskets for door / boot lid hinges,, and I will say from experience that the paper ones are hard to walk past. The rubber one compress as you tighten the nut... and they settle, which means that they eventually cause the door to drop (meaning readjustment is required). Plus they look hidious. The rubbers squashes out from under the hinge making your beautiful car look like a piece of modern art work. |

I have used both. The paper ones fall to bits and let water in to rot the door skin. I'm using rubber, THIS time. So far so good (12 months). |

Doc, the ones I got from Karcraft were about .040" thick... were yours that thick? . . . Hey you know... if you paint your doors, then put the hinges on,,, the door skin shouldn't rot

The paper holds water, eventually it gets through the crappy paint and away we go. I'm talking here about acrylic. You know, that ground up perspex stuff (all it is, really). 
Jury is out on 2 pack, which I have now. |

Every mini I've pulled down that has been outside has had rust behind the hinges and big brown stains... yuck.. Thats why I tried the rubber ones, but I just wasn't impressed with the appearence or the fact that you just keep compressing the damn things (making the appearence worse  )
. . . 2k should hold out better... it's tuff stuff.. it can with stand UV light better, its holds its shine longer, it doesn't fade as quickly, it doesn't chip as easy, it can leap tall buildings in a single bound... But come on, you gotta admit... you miss the look of the old fake finger nail paint ... come on ...

By the looks of things, well in my case anyway, it looked like the doors were sprayed with primer, then the doors were attached to the car with paper gaskets on the hinges and then top coated at the factory. If it was just primer wouldn't that be hydroscopic and absorb water, was anyone elses car painted in this manner, my doors were badly corroded under the hinges. This time I'm going to put primer on doors then spray some base coat where the hinges sit, assemble the lot then spray the metallic top coat. Could the rubber seals be trimmed with a blade after the door is assembled and tightened?? |

Depending on the 'look' that you'd like to finish up with (painted or un-painted gasket edges) you should be able to trim the gaskets back, but I would NOT use the rubber gaskets presently available. Perhaps the Docs ones are harder, but those available ATM are too soft. Crap really. To get the fasteners tight enough to hold the door without slipping, you'll endup buckling the door skin. The 'paper' ones are the go, but seal them in with your paint. I'll be cutting my own from now on from non-hydroscopic gasket material. |

had a good look at the Marcias on the weekend and I don't think its got any. Can you actually see the Paper Gaskets. 2Pac Paint |

With the paper gaskets you could put a light oil like sewing machine oil on them and let them dry before use, it should keep them from rotting , I,ll try that when I do the Van to see how it goes. . |
