If it were me I'd work out what I have to spend and build it according to maximum reliability and quality of parts and workmanship for the money, as opposed to building by horsepower. I'd rather have an engine with a little less power if it's more likely to run trouble free for longer. |

Work out what you want from an engine. Then research what will give you that for the highest relaibilty/cheapest cost. And dont forget a gearbox to up the cost. That opens up another can of worms for options and possible issues. So itd help if you told us what you wanted. |

How much of the build are you prepared to do yourself? Do you already have a motor and box or do you still have to purchase one and that is part of the $3k? |

Surely budget has some influence on it? If you had no budget then you'd have an injected turbo 1.4 litre 6 speed A series engine! ![]() |

Decide on what you want to spend and work from that. I am currently building 2 1100 engines for customers, a 1275 race motor and a 950 morris minor engine, they range in cost from around $2000 to $8000 just in parts alone! An example for cost purposes would be one of the 1100's I am currently building. I have purchased so far: Modified "race" head, big valves, new springs etc New 45 DCOE Weber & inlet manifold Lightened steel flywheel & backplate "Race" clutch plate & diaphram "Race" wide lobe camshaft High comp pistons Roller Rockers Vernier timing gear kit S/C 4 snc gear set S/H Mini K gearbox All this has cost me just under $6000 and I am yet to pay for any engine bearings & gaskets, all the gearbox bearings, Balancing & machine work, extractors & exhaust and then the added cost of my labour. You wont need to purchase some of the extravagent items for a road car but be prepared to spend at least $3000 just in parts to build a quick motor. Cheers David. |

We dont mean to crush your dreams, but its just what things cost. Is the 1275 engine you got complete? Or is it missing things like carbs, the dizzy, the coil, flywheel etc? While you there, do you have disc brakes and all the bits and bobs that they entail? |

Yes I use my mini on the road so the engine will have to be a road motor as such |

Have you thought about a rover front cut? If you could get a carb 1275 halfcut youd be well on the way. You could sell off the bits you dont need, and you also get a gearbox and the driveshafts and disc brakes at the same time. |
