My fuel gage doesnt work. I think its the float inside the tank. So I am going to have to unscrew? pullout? (There is a special service tool to take it out but i dont have it. so can i use just a screwdriver or something?)the circle thing from the inside of the tank to get to it. If i do this i will have to buy a new seal before I put it back in wont i?

No special tool...

Empty fuel at least half-way BEFORE starting (well, Duuuhhh)

and its an "O" ring, you can get away with re-using it if its OK....

It's piss-easy. Surprisingly James, you'd be amazed how many people forget the little fact of letting the tank drain (or siphoning it first) :o

There was a thread on here within the last 12 months about it.

And they probably quote special tool number yadda yadda for removing the locking ring too. You'd better slip down your local BMC dealer and get that seal then.
I've taken mine apart a couple of times (probably three times at least) and re-used the seal without incident.

Yeah it really depends what the seal LOOKS like.
If it crumbles away when you take the cap off the sender unit - time for a new seal.
Maybe if you were changing your manifold gasket you would just replace it because they are so cheap, but for a sender unit seal, theres not much point if the condition is good.

Before you pull it out, give the terminals a good wipe over with metho and rough them up a bit with sand paper and also clean the terminals on the end of the wires too to ensure a good contact before you rule out that it is indeed the sender that is farked.

Good call spaceboy. I thought mine was in the mechancials too and after hours of trial and error, found it to be an electrical problem, and in the end at the back of the dash, a loose connection. Just make sure man. there are a few tests u can do

what ever you do, dont use B.F.I ; Brute Force & Ignorance, ur holding a timebomb in your hands, be careful working with the fuel tank regardless if you have drained the fuel tank or not, i replaced mine not long ago, and is worth taking precautions so no spark is made. the fumes are intense. Especially when taking out the fuel sender.

stay kool

I'm with Spaceboy on this one... Make sure it is not an electrical problem first. Does you gauge work at all or does it just give you the wrong message? :?:

If it doesn't work at all and this happened all of a sudden them it may well just be a loose connection - mine was. :D

If you are planning on playing with the tank I would recommend removing the battery first.

the guage has been stuck on full the whole time I have had it, it goes down to empty when the car is off, so I assumed it was a problem with the float

It sounds like the guage it'self might be stuffed if the float had a leak it would read low not high.

What does the temperature gauge do? If the temperature reads high as well it is most likely a voltage regulator.

Otherwise I would guess it is the gauge itself do you have a spare you can try?
Also try cleaning up the contacts I changed my fuel guage over and then found out it was only a dodgy contact. :D (smile cause I still had a spare gauge)
