Hi everyone.

just thinking this evening, seeing as the box/engine/head assembly requires an entire rebuild maybe my best bet is to look at a complete power unit already built?

i notice there are some mini specialists advertising power units for sale, built ready to install.

i will price some options tomorrow but at this stage i think the costs to rebuild what i have, will be close to buying a power unit as a ready to go donk?

also this engine is at the end of the day, just a 1098 with bigger pistons, and it may pay to upgrade to a 1275 for close to the same money?

there is also a chance this block could need a rebore, which i dont think would be possible with the size bore it has right now? isnt 1216cc as big as an 1098 will go? the bore condition looks ok to me, but i am no expert engine builder. i will get chiltons to have a look at it but if it does need a rebore it may be a bin job.

has anyone had any experience with off the shelf power units? what companies can you recommend i try for quotes?

i am not after a big powerful engine, the car is a daily driver, but something with a little power would be nice. taking into account that this current engine in its current condition must not have been making anywhere near its full power potential and i was reasonably happy with its power for day to day driving use.

i will post some feedback tomorrow evening with my findings. i could be clutching at straws yet, a power unit may be much more expensive. i shall enquire and see how it compares.

Yes 1216cc (68mm bore) is about as far as it's worth going with a smallbore block.
If it needs a bore job I'd rather get another 998/1098 block and bore it +.100 for a set of Graham Russell's flat tops. Will give 1188cc and reliability.

or, get a 1275 and build it up with the goodies you want. You could buy one already built as suggested, is probably cheaper..

re the change to rod change, you are looking at another complete gearbox and shifter. The cases are different (although gears inside are same as a 4 synchro remote box).

Priced a hand full of power units available right around the country.

They were all more than i can afford right now. looks like i will stick to rebuilding what i have at this stage.

i will send the block, crank, rods and pistons to the engineering workshop this week and have it assesed and make a decision from there.

if it just needs some basics, clean, hone, face deck, cam bearings etc then it will work out fine.

but if it needs a rebore, i am not sure what i am going to do with it.
