I have a problem with my instrument cluster in my '71 clubman. The high beam light is on all the time with the lights off, and when the headlights are on, the high beam light is on in low beam and off, in high beam . I have been told that there is an earthing problem. Where would I start looking? |

It does sound like an Earthing problem, but are there any other problems (Instument lights dull, fuel / temp gauge reading odd etc)???? The Instrument Cluster Earth (it's a black wire) is bonded to the body under the bonnet, near the fuse box. There is a small body stiffener / brace that the wiring loom runs through. It is on this stiffener that the Earth Wire is bolted (1/4" UNF - 7/16" AF Spanner). It should have an internal star washer with it, so that a good wire-to-body connection is made. It that is OK, then it may be possible that the mulipin connector on the back of the instrument cluster is not making a good connection or the printed circuit on the back of the instruments is damaged. |

I did replace the flexi board with a new one and since I installed it have been having this problem. Instrument lights are good, nice and bright. Everything seems to be working normally apart from this issue with the high beam light |

The High Beam Indicator on your Instrument Cluster should have one side connected to the High Beam Circuit and the other side of the lamp to Earth. For some reason it appears that instead of being connected to Earth it is connected to B+ and if this has only happened since replacing the PC Board, then there may be something odd with it. If you take your Instruments off again, you should be able to easily trace the tracks on it. All the Earths go back to the same 'pin' of the multipin plug. You could also compare it to your old one if you still have it. |
