MG Rover calls in receivers
08/04/2005 07:14:41 AM

Cash-strapped car manufacturer MG Rover Group is going into financial administration after a proposed takeover deal with a Chinese firm fell through, the British government said on Friday.

"Tonight MG Rover has announced that their board has decided to call in the receivers," Trade and Industry Secretary Patricia Hewitt said.

Earlier on Friday, Rover - the last major British-owned carmaker - suspended production at its British factory and called on the British government to firm up its offer of a STG100 million ($A246.88 million) bridging loan to keep MG Rover solvent to assist the proposed deal with Shanghai Automotive Industrial Co, warning that time is "clearly running out".

MG Rover executives and British government officials have been in China holding emergency talks with SAIC.

Reports had suggested that the deal, announced in November by MG Rover, was close to collapsing because of Chinese concerns about the British manufacturer's perilous financial situation.

So this could mean the end of post-production replacement parts for the british market?
Maybe I should buy an older australian car, or buy all those rover parts I needed now.

From reading the English motor press this has been expected for some time despite Rover management denials. RIP 2005.

There was a mini shell in my primary school playground it was full of rusty sharp bits and redback spiders not surprisingly it was taken away some years later.

Mind you I never remember anyone getting hurt playing on it (well maybe a few bumped heads and perhaps small cuts but nothing serious) Today a primary school kid wouldn't be allowed within 100 metres of it

Maybe that was where I got my mini habit from :D

OK before we all slit our wrists..
I found today from an industry source that Rover Parts division is NOT owned by MG Rover, hasn't been for some time..
It's owned by an American company that makes big yella earthmoving stuff..

Phew...

Yeah Doc....same as Land Rover are owned by Ford....there is a lot of Rover Minis to support all around the world....I can't see the parts company or specialist Mini dealers going bust just yet.

The really sad part is that the Chinese will probably go in and rip the guts out of MG Rover..the profitable bits (if any)...

Saddest of all is the loss of the MG Name after 100 years

Parts supply for our cars will not be affected- so don't worry! They do NOT come from `MG Rover'.. even if it says `Rover' on the packaging! :D
