Not sure if its been asked before; but i'm contemplating getting some sort of cold air intake for the mini. There's kits out there like this one http://www.minispeed.co.uk/classic/index.cgi?task=showproduct&session=308622999&id=sr-037 but i could take the car to any exhaust shop or whatever and get them to mandrel bend me up some thin stainless and put on a pod filter and make up a flange for the air filter mount on the carby. So yeah... what have other people done. Oh, and is it worth it? Its kinda rice; but this is functional, and its proven by people who run cold air intakes. |

Read Vizard, he said it's a waste of time on a Mini. ![]() Pure Rice.... ![]() What does help is running a 3" cold air duct up to near the carb.. |

Hey Doc, why near the carb and not into the carb? |

Without finding it in the depths of Vizard, he said it basically f**ks up the mixture on an SU. K & N made one for Minis years ago, but took it off the market as it was NFG. I reckon you could run one on a Weber or Dellorto though, with a decent sized plenum. ![]() justminis has a mean mother on his hillclimb car- I'll find the pic.. <edit> here `tis.. |

Mmmm that IS nice. So that box is like an air trap yes? So it would have a similar effect as cold air induction. |

Will, that is a real CAI...I have a ricer version on my car..probably does SFA..but it's blue..and looks cool..i'll try and post pics later.. It's actually the brake ducting off a V8 supercar ![]() |

yeah, i think there was an article on this a couplle of mini worlds ago, try their website it looked quite good and had a kit you could buy....but i reckon it makes the engine bay look messsy, and for a road car is there much point? |

I don't think so. There's enough crap in my engine bay already.. I couldn't even fit the hose there! ![]() |

Hmmm, My air intake is right behind the grille ...... ![]() then again, so is the Turbo ![]() I GOT to have cold air, no room for an INtercooler that I've found yet, so the cooler it gets in, the cooler it goes in..... J |

how smart is it to challenge the mighty visard... but if we accept everything we hear from the past as gosspel we would still think the earth was flat.... I thought it was basic yeay 8/9 science that cooler air is more dense, therefor has more oxygen per measure.. therefor a more efficient burn... perhaps the twin SU didnt like the change of mixture, hell i havent tested it... but a lot ofpeople arent even using SU's anymore. and the scientific facts about oxygen concentration and burn efficiency still stand.. so burn me as a witch if you must... but someone had to say it.. PS if im to be burnt at the stake please add extra oxygen so its over faster LOL |

Yeah unless you are doing forced induction, cold air intake is ricer IMO ![]() ![]() |

Is it possible that it sort of got a bad reputation because it caused the SU carbs to (presumably) lean out as car speeds got higher? That would seem to be a problem with the SU carby not the idea of cold air intakes.... I would have thought based on the location of the Mini carbs at the back of the engine right over the exhaust that a cold air intake would have more potential than on most cars. ![]() I have a weber so I'm hoping the leaning out shouldn't be an issue, good air flow has to be being restricted by all the stuff in the engine bay not to mention the air intake sticking straight in to the firewall. ![]() If you haven't already guessed I am thinking of a cold air intake for by clubby ![]() ![]() besides it is the closest a NA engine gets to forced induction ![]() ![]() Any gains made should be at high car speeds so that would mean better cruising and hopefully better fuel economy at high speeds with a four speed gearbox that can't be bad ![]() Mind you this is my thoughts reality tends to be different ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() OK, now to show my ignorance what is the reason you would need a plenum ? is this to try to regulate air pressure? or is it because you are generally using a ramflow type filter and it needs to draw air from all around the filter? what if I was to move the filter away from the back there and have air ducted straight into my weber? |

68 delux, can i ask what your opinion is based on. If you have some factual information it would be nice to share it here so we all learn something. If you have the space in your engine bay, and there is good arguements that this will infact increase efficiency and power to some degree, and you have the ability to make a tidy workable version why not try it??? oh and this isnt supposed to sound smart arsed just that i believe you are a uni student of some description... |

U are such a ricer, Will! If you insist on CAI. Go get some of that tubey stuff. Mount one end at the grill, and the other up at the carb/airfilter. Easy. Cheap. |
