Post subject:  Grinding sound in first gear!

65 morris 1100 with remote change 4 spd box.

when taking off in first, soft medium or hard, there is a grinding sound comming from the floor at my feet. it has been gradually getting worse and worse and today the trip to and from work was quite interesting.

every now and again it jumps out of first gear with a bang, but most of the time it is fine and doesnt grind or anything. i have been thinking the engine mounts or engine steady bar are at fault but after a few good inspections of these, they seem fine.

the sound is similar to the engine hitting on the firewall or exhaust hitting the floor and creating a vibration grinding sound. i have checked the exhaust system aswell and it is quite away from the floor at all points.

what else could be causing this sound?

i have been mentioning recently about the bad oil leaks the engine and box has, and have decided tonight that i will embark on an engine out job in the next few weeks and do all the leaks in one go and clean it all up.

i would like to put my finger on the grinding so i can rectify this aswell.

I plan on having a good look this weekend under the car but i do have to drive to and from work all of this week so i am praying nothing goes wrong :D

Any suggestions? could it be the outpit shaft bearings.

My "Guess" is that one (or both) of your rubber uni-joints have half collapsed from years of oil contamination & simple old age & abuse

ok great, thanks for the feedback guys. both rubber couplings look heavily oil contaminated so i would say you are on the money there.

your suggestions are great as anything that is suspect will more than likley be replaced as a precaution.

Replace the whole lot away from unis. its not expensive and its an easy job while the engine is out.
Plus they take more power so one less thing to replace if you tune it.

You can stop it jumping out of 1st gear with an 'occy strap' but then you may have some trouble with holding it in 2nd and 4th :D

ha ha yeh thats almost as good as the wipers i had on my other mini. it had a peice of rope attatched to each wiper that wrapped around the windscreen.

you just pulled the rope left and right and the wipers operated :D

man that was dodgy !

We all knew it was inevitable. Yup you guessed it. Last night on the way home from work, what ever was making the grinding sounds, and getting worse every day, finally gave up.

Managed to get the car home ok, put it up on stands last night and had a good look. The underneath of the car is massivley covered in oil and both the output shaft rubber uni's have completely colapsed. The drivers side one has worn off centre, hitting on the gearbox housing when loaded up. This is what i suspect has been making the strange noises.

So i decided last night, that was it, engines comming out. Managed to get the majority of everything dissassembled and the engine is amost ready to pull out with the crane.

While the engine is out, she will get a bit of a birthday.

Ordered some parts to start the ball rolling today, and will spend the next few weeks getting her sweet as.

Thanks to matt miniman for suggesting to look at the output shaft uni's and thanks everyone else for their input.

I will no doubt be making many posts over the comming weeks :D

I'm rebuilding a Mini-K box for Morris 1100. Some time in the past the RH rubber unijoint has done what yours did, it seriously gouged the casing deeply. So much so that I crack tested it, to be sure...
They are pretty thick there though, and it was OK. But I'd have a good squiz at it when it's out.

Yeh thanks for the advice drmini. It does look as though it has worn into the case there a little. I will have a good look at it when its out.

Hi,

Sorry just found this thread. Yes the 1100s are notorious for that problem. I have had them wear so far that the u-bolts wore right thru and snap. If you can replace them with the nylon ones like this (see below) you will eliminate that problem.

Try to track down some new engine mounts (clutch end shared with mini, radiator end shared with morris minor and sprite) cause these engines do ove around a fair bit. Do you have an engine steady? That can help as well. I have half a lower engine steady somwhere that I fabbed up years ago sitting here not doing anything.

Anyway, sounds like you're on the right track. Good luck with it, and post some pics.

Cheers

Thanks madmorrie. The car has only got one engine steady fitted above the clutch on the drivers side.

the engine mounts seem ok but may have sagged some. it does seem as though the engine is not sitting square in the car.

I am replacing all the mounts anyway. was looking at these heavier version uni's, what do you think?

Are these similar to what you are talking about?

They are the latest version of the ones Madmorrie posted above.
Way better than rubber ones.
But DON'T overtighten the U-bolts...
