Post subject: | when new people join |
Hi all, I would just like to say there seems to be a bit of a problem when new people join the forum that if they do not do the right thing by either posting in the wrong spot or not adding them selves to the right "origial" post people here have a real dig at them and put them down. Im sure this does not give our new forum friends a good feeling about our forum and the nice people that are on it. I know that when this is said to them it is just to point them in the right direction for future posts etc but if it could be explained to them in a nicer way i am sure it will be taken well by the new forum user and they will stay on the forum and not think that we are all a bunch of rude w*nkers my 2 cents worth. |

Here, here. Especially when some of the longer standing & more well known members post off topic threads and no-one seems to care, but a n00b posts OT and everyone jumps on them. I would go a step further and say that only the admins should be responsible for telling people they have posted in the wrong forum or whatever. And in that case they should just move the thread, not make a big fuss over it. I guess the other case is when people ask a question and someone rudely replys about using the search function or how that subject has been done to death. Perhaps we need a sticky thread with a FAQ (frequently asked questions), or titled "Read this before posting" or something. |

I know what you are getting at, and it's an important thing to remember....but the only instance I have seen of this lately was when a new member posted an intro, then whinged there were no replies.... ![]() On the other hand....it's not too hard to READ a forum index and for example see the heading FOR SALE...therefore post in there! I have seen geeky computer forums where members have like 20 000 posts, think they are hot sh!t and flame any newbie that asks a question. We don't get that here.....'most' members are pretty patient and answer the same old questions time and time again. Overall, this forum is very friendly......but yea, from time to time we all need a reminder on how to behave. |

I see no problem in encouraging someone to use the SEARCH function. After all, that IS what it's there for! 9 times out of 10 people say 'use search' because the question has been answered so many times, that the person asking will get a definitive answer from previous posts. I used search recently for some Cooper S facts, and found EXACTLY what I was looking for in several old posts. The info was so accurate, I doubt people would go to so much detail again in a new thread. ...my $10 worth ![]() |

My only GRIPE (for lack of a better word) as a newbie is the number of different forum sections here. Seems to be too many for the relatively low amount of members here. I think combining some of the sections would go a long way to cutting down multiple posts on the same topic. There's also a LOT of general banter that contributes nothing to helping with a member's problem.....and it quickly builds up to form multiple pages and useless information. |

you have accurately described every web forum i've ever been a member of. well, almost - you usually do get what you need buried in with the banter. and both are what keeps me coming back for more. |

I guess thats why it's called a forum............ as long as there are topics and threads created, there will be points in every forum worldwide where the thread goes off topic........ I am a member of a few othere forums around the place and i for one find it refreshing that everytime a thread goes OT, at least Poeee and the mods give it time to get back on topic, unlike other places where you are warned or the thread/topic closed....... Please guys (NOobs here especially) just roll with the punches and skip through the S*&t...... cos if the forum ends up being changed for the worse (ie.condensing topics) there will be more problems than just the odd flame or off topic post........ My 2c |

I see that differently. How many people have made new friends through this forum???? The 'banter' is how that has been achieved. If you take away the banter, and have serious Mini questions only, it will be a pretty stale and boring forum! Also, what some people see as meaningless SPAM posts, can be interpreted as conversation among friends..... Yea it can be frustrating if you want info, but I find it to be light entertainment. ![]() |

I have no problem with pointing out the search. It's just when people take the attitude that the n00b should inheritly know that the topic has been covered before and what search terms to use. |
