In regards to rego (which i dont plan to renew) insurance and all the rest?

planning to give the moke a make-over in the colder months (how british of me...) paint, engine, canopies etc.... do i need to tell my insurance company that i plan to take it off the road or the RTA? its not for another 6 weeks or so... just want to figure it all out now.

I realise that it will be off for more than 3months, so i will need another blue slip, that is fine.

any constructive input more than welcome

If you think the car will only be off the road for three months, then I'd leave it registered and insured. The cost of them is close enough to getting a blue slip and all the stuffing around that it's easier to leave it.

If it's a long term thing, ring the insurance mob and cancel it. They should refund the unused time portion, and from there you could get laid up insurance to protect it in the shed.

Rego is the same deal as insurance pretty much, except there's no laid up cover.

Definitely make sure you get laid up cover if its sitting there for a while.



Shannons are great with that. It also covers you (from memory) for transport too and from places on tow trucks etc...

If you do take it off the road and feel moke deprived, come over and borrow Moira for a day or two...

if you have the original AAA-999 type number plates and want to keep them, make sure you have the RTA hold them for you when you deregister.

Otherwise when you go back and get a new rego they will give you a new standard AA-AA-99 type number plate. At that point if you say that you want the original numbers (if they are still available) you will be charged the princely sum of $100 per year for "non-standard personalised" plates. Bloody theives

But I would be a bit more diplomatic and simply refer to them as licensed burglars

I had my yellow UFE-... plates put on hold at Blacktown RTA, paid them the $$ and got a receipt.
9 months later I got a blueslip, went back to get my plates back and they were GONE!!
Somebody there had decided to scrap them, so much for their plate holding system.
They did remake me a new pair (out of the aluminium foil they use now) for nix but I had to pay for 2 new standard plates to use in the meantime.

ps. these new alloy plates are a joke- tamperproof screws or not, you could peel them off with a screwdriver or a pair of pliers.

They really are rubbish. Good for making tinfoil hats, nothing else.

I doubt those in the Goulburn holiday camp do anything like this now. I bet these are imported from you know where.

we're allowed to store our old plates ourselves down here - and for free, we just pay about $80 to put them back on a car
