If you're asking about the screws that hold the binnacle cover on the original Cooper and Mk1 S instrument mount use pan head 4G x 3/8" chrome plated self tapers. If the screw holes have been enlarged through over tightening use 6G. Stainless steel screws also work well. With a little buffing they look similar to chrome plating.

Hi all,

I'm making a mock Mk 1 cooper s dash and want to put the four little screws on the face.

Does anyone have any pictures of one. I'd like to be able to see what the original screws look like etc.

The original screws were 3/16 UNF x 3/4" with a Phillips Pan Head, and it appears they were just zinc plated. Sorry, no pics.

You are 100% correct. The unf bolts hold the metal face to the brackets, the self tappers hold the plastic to the metal face. I have had a Mk1 dash in a box for about 15 years and never looked at it very hard. Now I have looked I find I am missing one self tapping screw!

Chrome plate self tappers. We had a packet of new screws chrome plated years ago just for Mk 1 Dashs, as I could never find good originals.

thanks for the replies. So I'm going to go out and buy some pan head 4G x 3/8" chrome plated self tapers??? Does everyone agree? Hopefully chrome plated but stainless will pass. Where might I find these? Bunnings? or fastener supplier?

No way in hell Bunnings will have anything chrome plated, you might get lucky with stainless. I reckon even a fastener supply place would be hard pressed with chrome plated.. you may need to get them done yourself.

Others shots show how the Mk1 pod is assembled over the original single binnicle whick I always thought was a very clever design.

Screw - cover to support plate. Part number: PTP603 = chrome plated Morris Cooper 997 From The Mini Cooper Supplement to HYL2980 Screw - cover to support plate. Part number: PTZ603 = zinc plated Morris Cooper S from HYL3255 The things you find when doing some minuscule research. Gotta get a life!!! You make yer choice!!! Shiny bits look nice on my instrument binnacle.

Bunnings had a range of Pan head stainless self tappers, but the hook that holds the 3/8" was empty. The closest they had was 6Gx1/2" which probably isn't close enough.
