Could be the hydraulics or the arm / thrust bearing or even something as simple as adjustment.
Have a well endowed redhead lady assistant push your clutch (then she can come push mine
) while you watch....your clutch arm that is. See how mutch it moves. The second stage that you are talking about could be where the free movement ends and it actually starts taking up. The free movement should be taken up by adjustment.
