ok, at the moment i am running a pretty standard 998(extractors and a bit of head work ect.) but i would like somthing a bit more.....i have a 1098+60thou sitting aorund and i was wondering would you suggest mucking aroung with head/cams and stuff or is it a waste of time???
Will there be any signifant power/tourque increase? Ive read Vizards books but theres not much on 1098's

A 1098 will give you a useful torque boost over the 998, but it won't rev as hard. Mine likes to go from about 3,000 when the cam comes in, but I've never pushed it beyond 6,000 because I want it to last ;)

If you already have the 1100, I'd chuck it in.. but if you were buying a new engine I'd suggest spending the extra $$ on a big bore.

[edit] As for 1100 mods, I have a 12G295 head on mine, and it loves it. If yours has a 12G202 you can get useful power and torque out of it with some porting and chamber work, and a set of twin HS2's.

A stock 1098 has about 8lb/ft torque and 10HP more than a stock 998.
Yeah it's worth it for driveability in a road car.

A well sorted & researched 1098/998 can give quite good and surprising results.
I'll hopefully be building a 1098 this year.
My mate has a 1098 that will keep a healthy 1275 honest, is not a pig to drive in traffic either.
I'm aiming to improve on what he has. So I'll be adding disk brakes even though I don't legally have to.

The 1152cc in Spiro is great fun to drive:

- 1098 + 60th
- 12G295 Head
- 40mm DHLA Dellorto
- RE13 Cam
- Lightened Flywheel

Consistently delivered ~45HP on the MRC Dyno Castle Hill which is more than some 1275's are making. I disagree about the revs part, sure a 998 would like it better but mine has seen over 7000rpm many times and loves it. It's about 10 years old now since the crank/bearings/rebore were done.

I would suggest disk brakes though if going down this route.

I'll be rebuilding this one to get more power in the future, it just a lot of fun to drive a nice small bore.

my 60 tho over 1100 is pretty gutsy.

1 3/4 SU on a minispare manifold
12g202 vizardized with 1100s valves
Offset rocker bushes
re13 cam
Lightened and balanced everything
9-1 compression..

still has some bugs to iron out but its worth it, IF you have an 1100 already. If you need to buy a block do a bigbore,

yea should be worth the effort, i had a hot 1100 and it was great.
While they are capable of revving, they shouldnt be taken over 7000 which is plenty imo. 8)

Im in the same boat as you Jordy.

Contemplating my first engine build (small bore) its a 998 not sure what to do though... throw in a 1098 crank, bore it out, and tickle the head more, or go all out and make a nice 1098 sc12 monsta....

OR

do a similar build to Gerg's sa-weet 998 (+100)

i am about to start building a turbo 1098, I'm in the process of getting the parts now, when it's done should be very similar to benjamin's. I've read somewhere that he sells the exhaust manifolds and dump pipes is this true and how much are they

1132cc, big valved GR 202 unleaded head, RE83 cam, Mini K box. 8)
Should go alright when he gets a decent carby on it.

Our 1100 goes well 8)

Well - it's actually a 1220. Put out 60HP at the last Ausmini dyno day. :D
