Post subject:  Faulty Fuel Gauge? Or just very economical

We've all listened to our friends and family complain about fuel prices and how much its been costing them. Of course us Mini driver just sit back and laugh at the prices, I dont even look at the price when I go to fill up. Lately though iv'e been a bit worried about my fuel gauge. I normally let it go down to empty before I refill, but the pump only lets me put about 16 litres in my 74 clubman, and this only ends up costing me about 17-18 dollars a week! Im pretty sure the clubman 1100 has a 25 litre tank, so why cant I put more than 16L in? I thought maybe the fuel gauge is a bit off and when it says it's empty it is actually a quater full or something.
Does anyone else have this problem?

Most cars would have a long filler neck before the fuel goes into the tank the mini's goes pretty much straight into the tank.
So if you have the nozzle stuck right the way in and the nozzle clicks off I figure you are probably still a fair way off full. But don't fill it up too much otherwise it can slosh up against your fuel cap when you go round turns and if the petrol cap doesn't seal well you might loose some fuel.

Mine does this occasionally

Hi, Few things that I can think of:

The float thingy at the end of the fuel sender arm is flooded, meaning that it no longer floats enough to give an accurate reading
The fuel sender arm is not bent correctly to indicate FULL when it's full and Empty when it's not
The sender is buggered

i had a fuel leak once
it was about 3mm off the last notch

but ill tell you what
about 8L of petrol had to be drained from the tank
one can after another after another

and yes i can usually only fit about 12L when it clicks

I fill mine til it clicks, then pull the pump nozzle out a little and keep filling, if it clicks I keep pulling the pump nozzle out til I see petrol in the neck of the tank.

I am with Marvin, and when close to empty I can get about 20 litres in.

On the subject of fuel economy, the last cruise (about 500km mixture of highway, slow stuff, up hill and city driving) did me about 20 odd litres in the 998. Fuel stats around the 4-5L per 100km. I thought that was impressive enough to share.

yeah I normally stick the nozzle all the way in, will try your methods. Hey 68matic I know what it feels like to have a fuel leak, just filled up my tank with BP ultimate, bout $1.11 a litre, used the last of my lead substitute and the hose to the fuel pump falls half of and fuel pissed out everywhere, lost about half my tank till we got the problem sorted. Anyway thanks for your help guys.
