Post subject:  Replacing gauges

Hi Guys, can anyone help me out with this ??When I renew the interior of my 78 Leyland S (998 ) Do I have to keep the same 3 gauge instrument binnacle or can i replace speedo as well as change tacho so in effect I am changing the dash panel completely ??I know with the speedo the cable needs to be the same end going into the motor/gbox. If I fit water temp and oil press gauges are the outlets already there ??

They are almost all interchangable.

Differences if you are buying a second hand set;-

Speedo Cable - early ones were screw on and about 1977 they changed to a clip on.

Tacho connections - the early ones used a RVI type Tacho which has a 'loop in and loop out' type connection and the later ones were a RVC type connection which just had a single pick up from the points. The wiring Harness in your car will suit only the RVC type Tacho (although it's not difficult to modify).

I didn't realise from your first post that you wanted something custom !

Yes, you could put spitfire gauges in, however the Air Speed Gauge will need significant re-calibration and you won't have to worry about screw on or clip on speed cables.

You'll also need a different distributor with a mechanical tacho take off!

It shouldn't be too difficult to put different gauges in. If they are non-smiths ones, you'll have to (preferably) get matching senders for fuel and temp, but that's not a 'show stopper'. I would think it more difficult to tastefully mount them actually.

<EDIT> for an oil presure gauge, there is presently a switch in the block near the distributor. You can either swap that for a gauge sender, or put a tee in so you can have both. Not a big deal.

if it is too much trouble I may stick to smiths gauges. I thought a different look might be ok though. What is an air speed gauge.

Time and money dependent ofcourse, there is no limit to what gauges you can fit into a mini, or any car for that matter.

Well, think of it this way;

Your Mini travels on the ground so it has a (ground ) speed gauge, more commonly known as a speedo.

A Spitfire on the other hand.........

SPLITFIRE

even if he MEANT Spitfire, I think triumph spitfire gauges would be a more likely candidate than a Supermarine Spitfire..... and I don't think Triumph spitfires can actually leave the ground... ;)

My bad (I should put my glasses on a bit more often). I did see something (somewhere) where someone was selling Aircraft Gauges modified for Auto use.
