Post subject:  Painting plastic flairs

I decided to paint the flairs and mirrors which are both black plastic (roughish textured finish), but Im not sure how I need to prep them for paint.

Anyone know what I need to do, if its more than sand and prime with acrylic primer?? then paint as usual?

i just did my wifes plastic flares... You have to use plastic primer on them, get it from all paint shops. Then sand and paint :)

nah etch primers are for metal surfaces,, plastic primer is different to it. I got a 500ml can and used 1/2 of it on the 4 flares, so dont get to much. You can put hi fill primer over the top of it to take away the rough surface on the plastic as the plastic primer is very thin.

plastic primer is clear and a bitch to paint, because it is so thin.

Spray it on as a mist coat.

If I remember correctly, a good brand plastic pack primer is expensive.

I bought my tin years ago.....so can't remember the price. Sorry.

i need to do this too
so you sand it back first to remove any paint, then spray the primer on right?

the 'clear' plastic primer only likes bare plastic surfaces. I found it reacts with old paint, and makes it craze.......so only spray it over plastic, not paint!

yeah I figured if I want perfectly shiny/glossy flairs and mirrors I'll have to sand them perfectly flat before the plastic primer, so normal primer only needs a very light sand then paint..

gotta go glossy ;)

if you paint them on the car...you won't get coverage down the inner sides of both the flares and guard.

I think you will also be setting yourself up for cracking along the join which would be hard to fill with paint alone anyway...
