Post subject:  Removing diff pin from casing

Hey folks
were trying to get the diff pin out of the casing and it seems to be putting up quite a fight.
Is there any trick or special way to get them out or is it that we aren't using a big enough hammer :)

have you removed the "Crown-Wheel" ???

once all the side bolts are out & the crown-wheel is off the carrier,,, then there will be a small roll pin visible on the face of the carrier

punch it out from the other side & then punch the big diff pin out

ok?

Thanks we haven't taken out the crown wheel yet. I think I got the names mixed up sorry.
The bit were trying to get out is the puin that holds the two smaller gears in, is it tapered or anything like that or should it come out of either end?

The diff pin is straight, it has a groove near one end for a roll pin as Matt says.
You MUST take the crownwheel off first, then knock the roll pin clear of the diff pin using a pin punch..

no,,, i totally understand what you`re saying,,, but to do what you want to do, you will need to remove the big gear from the casing(carrier)

undo all the bolts that hold the crown-wheel onto the carrier & then you will see the tiny little pin in the face of the carrier

you`ll need to punch this little pin out "TO BE ABLE" to remove the big central pin between the 2 small gears

it isn`t tapered,,, it`s staright,,, the little pin holds the big pin in there

without removing the little roll-pin, the big pin won`t come out

get it>>>???

yay for the pin that gets stuck in that naughty thing, and even with a punch can be a real pain to get off, and undoing the bolts that hold the crown wheel on are also a bugger without attempting to crack the teeth off the crown wheel. A little care and alot of force and yay your free.

You could always use a bigger hammer or a bigger press and save the trouble of taking the crown wheel off

What was that one of Murphies.....If it jams, force it. If it breaks, it needed replacing anyway.........
