I've just got a quick question I was hoping somebody could help me with. Putting an air-con in a mini, do you need to source an air-con unit from something like a rover mini, or could you simply go to you-pull-it and rip one out from something like a hyundai getz? Will they both work? Or is it a completely different setup? Thanks in advance. |

I don't actually have a mini yet, just trying to figure out how much it'd cost, how much to save up, and stuff like that. How much did you want for the unit out of curosity? |

If you dont have a mini why dont you just buy a rover mini where everthing is there and built with an aircon included? |

I think the rover mini will be a bit out of my price range. I haven't seen many for sale, and the ones I've seen start at about $7000. Although I haven't been looking for terribly long. How much does a standard unrestored one go for? |

Colum Rover minis were very popular in Japan. Some could be imported and registered and some couldn't. Those that couldn't or were damaged as in an accident were imported as front cuts. That is; everything forward of the "A" pillars. Everything can be transplanted into an Australian body shell. Steve O'Malley in Adelaide was a prolific importer. He is a member on here. He was the person I when to see when we were first in Adelaide for your engagement. He would be the first person to make contact with and discuss the finer details. I believe he no longer deals in imported Jap minis but he does have a wealth of knowledge and is local to you. I have seen Doogies A/C unit in car and I know it works. Mike |

I have air con in the deluxe. Used the rover setup and all went in pretty easy. I wouldn't bother with anything from another ca, having looked at the whole thing last week in a plan to ditch the heater and AC box in the cabin (they're separate) and replace them with one unit to save space. I discovered that the factory unit is already as small as it's going to get and fitting something from another car would be far more complicated than it first might seem, as all the under bonnet parts in other cars are bigger too. |

If you havn't got a Mini yet, i'd recomend getting a Rover front cut. Just transfer it all over in to a shell of your choice. Disc brakes, more modern engine (even fuel injection if you want), and all the air con bits you need. |

I just use the quarter vent. Great little feature, which should be reintroduced in modern cars. |

That's the way to do it. Can even get one with a smashed in front and put the front cut wings on it, would cut the cost down even more. |

Front cuts are good if you want a 60s/70s mini with modern internals but having done the conversion myself if I was starting again tomorrow I'd just go out and buy an injected rover and start from there. More initial outlay but can be cheaper in the long run depending how pedantic you are about things when transferring them over.

You just crack the back half of the slider open a couple of inches and the air blows straight onto the side of your face. Refreshing and cheap!

I agree with Harley. Buying a front cut and installing motor, air cond, dash etc etc in my van (to a fairly high standard) worked out to be way more expensive than just buying a complied Rover Mini. And lots of time too. I wanted the van though, so I would do it all again. If you want a sedan, just pay the extra and buy the Rover, will be cheaper in the long run! |
