Post subject:  Gearbox problem

Hi guys, i would like to hear theories for whats wrong with this gearbox in question

A remote 4sync and what happens is once a gear is selected, as the clutch engages the gearbox graunches. After this occurs gear selection doesn't function properly (is tight and doesnt give full throw of lever) After letting it settle it will sometimes select gears properly again, but still graunches in operation.

As far as the external linkages go they all appear to function correctly, however the linkage above the diff is loose, so that the clamp slides up and down on the shaft slightly (im guessing the pinch bolt is all that is driveing it) but the spline still drives the clamp fine. (i tried to tighten the clamp but it is very tight) I think that this only leads to some play in the selection, but still allows functionality. The clutch also functions properly

So what are peoples opionions until i can pull it apart and see?

Obviously the easiest thing to do is to correct the linkage wear that you have spotted. If the pinch bolt is tight as you say, the shaft may be worn, although I have never seen this happen. Maybe you could try replacing the "knuckle" parts first.

The movement of the linkage on the spline may be causing gear selection problems which is causing the graunching noise (selectors not allowing gears to fully mesh).

If this does not eliminate the problem, I suspect there may be wear in the mainshaft of the box itself, possibly the centre main bearing (the double row one) is badly worn and allowing lateral movement in the shaft and associated selection problems.

Any other ideas?

I am Mini-less until whatever's broken is fixed

Does the problem occur in all gears? What about if you go from reverse to forward gears, does it make any difference?

cheers

We only tried in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear with the handbrake on just slowly releasing the clutch until it made the sound.

Doesn't sound very promising by what's described, you might have to get an experienced mini fixer (madmatt, etc) to check it out. :(

cheers

The guy who posted this topic is my Mini mechanic.

We're not going to know any more until the engine comes out anyway :)
