i have spoken with someone in brisbane today who had a mini they need to sell in a hurry. i work with him in fact.

i am going to have a look at it tomorrow but wanted to ask for some feedback.

the car is a 74 leyland clubman S and the only thing i am really interested in is the engine and box. the body is stripped bare to a shell and it comes with a heap of boxes full of everything that came off the car. the body is still basically untouched. not really worth much. $500 maybe?

question i have is with regards to what the approx value of the engine/box unit would be.

its a 998 with a stock head and recon remote box with twin 1.25 SU's.
it has a custom made diff ratio, something crazy like 2.6:1 or something. have to find out exactly tomorrow but he apparently had the diff crown wheel and pinion custom made to his specs. his aim was to get lower rpm on the highway. he says he paid $2000 for the crown wheel and pinion but i am not really interested in that.

its apprently pretty standard clubman S stuff but rebuilt by the owner. the guy is a mechanic and had all the maching done through chilton's and rebuilt everything with new parts to standard spec.

the upside is he has spent a fortune on chroming. he has chromed a hell of a lot of part all over the engine and had the clutch houing and gearbox casing polished. looks pretty trick 8)

i am thinking being a stock engine but all rebuilt its got to be worth $1500-$2000.

i know this is a tricky question as i dont have any further information than what i have listed here but with this info what do you guys think it might be worth?

Depends on the condition of the shell, id say closer to a grand, maybe 1500 if its rust free.

The engine and gearbox i doubt would be worth 1500-2000, it is only a 998, but id say 1000-1500 id pay if i was looking to buy one.

the engine is fully reconitioned apparently by the the owner, new pistons, rings, bearings and gaskets but all to standard specs.

it has yet ot be run after being built. it is out of the car and ready to fit.

usually it is pointless to put new pistons and rings into a standard bore, over time the bores oval, so you lose compression aand power, if it has been rebored and machined then mabe it would be worth closer to $1000, on the plus side it has a rebuilt gearbox which are usually worth a bit.

ok went and had a look at this mini today as i said.

the guy is leaving the country at the end of the week and has to get rid of the car as it is to expensive to take it overseas with him.

but he wants to much for it in my opinion for what i am after. even as a package i think he may be asking much more than it is worth. he is asking $10,000 for the lot.

he refuses to split anything.

he has receipts for parts and labour totaling over $12,000 over 12 months, much of the parts are overkill for a standard road car in my opinion. for example the engine has a KAD lightened racing flywheel which he paid $1700 for. and the custom 2.6:1 diff ratio which cost him $2200 to have manufactured. he says this would give around 2500 rpm on the highway. i understand what his aim here was but i dont realy want a car that will possibly struggle from a standing start but get better fuel economy on the highway.

to me these parts are not worth much as i do not intend to use them.

you would need to see value in the diff and the flywheel in order to pay what he is asking.

the engine power unit itself is all stock 1098 not modded in any way but rebuilt with new pistons, rings and bearings. the engine is more than likley very good but not much else is useful to me.

he has about 10 parts chromed, radiator shroud, brackets etc, which he says cost him $2000.

the shell is not much chop, it requires much work, a lot of rust in the shell. it requires a full floor and a panels, boot and complete rear panel etc. quite a lot of rust in the roof, boot lid, doors, all the usual places.

the guy is a really nice guy and i didnt want to offend him but he will have to end up selling the car to either someone who wants to pay new shelf prices for what he has bought, or someone who wants a project with some parts suppled, the engine/box built and a body to restore.

if your after a mini restoration package, let me know and i will pass you his details.

his english is a little hard to understand but he has good intentions and is very helpful.

he is not interested in selling anything separatley but will sell the lot as a package.

i wish him luck in the sale.

if your interested please pm me. 8)

$10, 000.. tell him he's dreaming...

for $10, 000 you would expect a good paint job, mild 1275, rego, the lot.

there is a van on ebay its supercharged 1380 or something like that, nice paint job, adjustable geometry etc he is asking around $10, 000, which is what you would expect...
