can i reuse my old cylinder head bolts when i fit a recon head on the engine?
or should i bite the bullet and get new ones?

If it has BOLTS bin them. They are mostly 40 years old now and break easy where they screw into block. Fit studs and nuts instead, like all other Minis (except 1098)- ARPs are best if you can afford them. |

sorry slightly incorrect terminology there. they are cylinder head studs and nuts not bolts. i see minisport have a set for about $120. has to be the go i think!

Well, my 1360 (with 120+ HP) runs old Cooper S head studs, no problem... So will my new 1412 stroker. |

So its $120 i dont really need to spend unless they are buggered? I am not trying to cut corners, just choose only what is required to do the job right but cost effectivley.

If they are original studs and nuts and the threads not stretched or the studs bent, they should be fine in an N/A road motor. Fit the proper original thick washers, or use the later flanged nuts. Wire brush any crap off the threads and oil them before fitting. ARP stud & nut kit is nice if you have the budget (I don't, but if running a turbo, I would buy them). |

cool, thanks for the advice. i will clean these ones up as they look in good order. i might replace the nuts though. |

are the nuts damaged? It's hard to buy nuts that are anywhere near the same quality as the originals, unless you buy a set of actual head stud nuts... IE don't go to bunnings and buy off the shelf |

as mentioned in my other posts i have been hoping to keep costs to a minimum and only replace what was buggered/worn and reuse what i could save that was still good. but as this is turning out to be a full blown rebuild now i might as well go the whole hog and build it properly. just means instead of having the car back on the road in the next few weeks, it will take till the end of the year or so. i just love public transport! but as they say S#$@ happens.
