Post subject:  Cam bearings
This is the cam bearing closest to the oil pump. It is a bearing isnt it? it does come out of the block? this isnt a machined surface in the block is it, its an actual bearing shell you can replace?

the other cam bearings are fine but this one is shagged. surprisingly the cam is not marked very much other than usual wear. i expected to see gouges but its not to bad.

do you think i can get away with replacing one cam bearing shell?

i know if i do the others i will need the tool, or take it to a engine builder.

is there a hole and a slot in that bearing? can't from the angle

get that block to a reconditioners.... get it cleaned to within an inch of it's life and all new cam bearings, and get the cam measured at the same time

something big and chunky getting in there and the cam grinding it away, or no oil - hence my question above, is there a hole and a slot in that bearing for the oil to go through?

the lenthways slot in the cam picks up oil from the bottom of that bearing and squirts it out the top to the rocker gear... and obviously lubricates the cam on the way through

just went and checked, no oil hole is visible in the cam bearing at all.

maybe the bearing was installed in the wrong position, blocking this hole?

can i knock that bearing out? it looks as if it is almost worn away completely!

what are your rockers like? the bushes and shaft will probably be cactus

you can knock the bearing out if you like, but I'd leave it... my machine shop have a puller that gets them out

Jason,,, somehow i don`t think you have the picture yet

stip the whole thing down & do the "Whole" thing properly

there has been copious amounts of metal go through your engine

it will need the entire engine & the entire g-box fully rebuit

thanks for your feedback guys. yes i understand i need to pull it all down now, but up until now i have been optimistic that mostly i had come accross was in not to bad a shape. all the crank and rod bearings are nice, but the oil pump and 1 cam bearing are shagged. the bores dont look to bad and the rings look pretty good.

i work for a mechanical workshop and have engine builders i work with so i understand how it all works and have had them look at some components.

but as we all have agreed, the block will now need to be totally stripped and taken to chilton engineering for the works.

i was pulling all this down for a reason. i wanted to make sure it was ok to just clean up and put back in.

i have just been hoping *fingers crossed* that it didnt require as much work as what this will now become.

again thanks everyone for your input. 8)

i will strip the block completely over the weekend and send the block, crank, pistons and rods to chiltons for the required work over the comming weeks.

i sent the gearbox/diff unit away today to Sydney. when it comes back it will be packed with a reco 12G295 head, this will be all i can afford to do for a while.

the bottom end build will have to wait for more funds to become available 8)

There is no oil feed to that bearing from the block.
The lube to that rear bearing shell is a tiny hole in the oil pump flange. If it gets blocked, = no oil to that bearing. Check da pump....
Take block to a reco shop as suggested, get the set of 3 bearings fitted (they are cheap).

Here it is in all its glory after being removed from the block. I wonder how long it has been running with no lubrication?
