| Post subject: | Oil pressure relief valve |
This may have been contributing to the low oil pressure i was experiencing, combined with a shagged oil pump. The plunger was jammed in the hole. took alot of effort to get it out! 
replaced it with a new ball and spring type. cleaned it all up, some fresh clean oil to lube it all, and fitted it back together. the new spring is craploads stronger than the old one. |

I think whatever was in your oil contributed to shagging the oil pump, and that relief valve... |

I agree. After buying the car i changed the oil on the first saturday after and the oil was disgusting. i changed to oil 1 week later, and then again 1 week after that. each time the oil was black as black and quite a bit of gunk came out. once it was relativley clean i went about 2500kms till the next change. wasnt until the 5th oil change and about 7500kms since i bought it that i found metal filings come out in the oil when i drained it. they have probably been in there for some time. hardest thing will be to clean as much of it out without completely dismantling the engine to a bare block. any suggestions on a cleaning method that may work? |

any suggestions on a cleaning method that may work? you will NEVER get it clean without stripping it completely, and pulling out the oil gallery plugs - see your other thread, after you've cleaned it, take it to a machine shop and get it tanked and cleaned, machining done, then take it home and clean it again, and again, and again wash the gearbox out very thoroughly too - I use diesel (fuel) in a 1l pump-up garden spray bottle - turning and spraying, draining everything out and repeating again and again |

well if i am going to do that i might as well strip it to a bare block, and rebuild the bottom end with new rings, bearings, plugs, etc etc etc. i didnt really want to strip it bare and start from scratch as the costs are already more than 5 times what i had origonally planned to spend.  when i first started someone on this forum joked and said something like "once the engine is pulled down, it quickly can turn into a full blown restoration!", he wasnt joking!

Considering the state of the oil pressure relief and the cam bearing etc it would be wise to check the crank bearings, which then gives you a nice bare block to clean. |

Jason,,, metal has gone through the whole thing,,, (Obviously) that means that if you don`t strip it down "Completely" then there will still be metal particles flying around inside the thing the box is probabaly the cause of it all so that would need a full strip down too it`s a "Package" mate not like a "normal" car where the gearbox & diff are basically seperate issues,,, these things "NEED" full strip down & make sure "Everything" inside is right,,, one thing left un-done could (& usually is) the "Un-do-ing" of it """""AGAIN"""" how much money do you want to spend the 2nd or 3rd time round until it`s all done correctly???? |

Yeh i understand matt. Just depressing the previous owner was sooo retarded! so many things worn/failed with this engine/box are caused by incorrectly fitted/installed parts. anyway you get that. lets just press on. bring on the overtime!!!!!! there will plenty more stupid questions from me yet, dont worry
