I've got an 850 engine (many thanks for Remickz!!) and interested in the crank shaft. It appears to have had a fair bit of wedging done to it. Is it a factory thing, or has thing engine had been ballanced in a previous life? |

The fact that the box that you gave me with it was a 1128 and the diff housing an 850 magic wand (not the 4spd synchro magic wand type) makes it quite interesting, if it was infact one whole power plant at one point. |

I have a 850 crank here that sounds just like yours, with what looks like wedging on some of the webs. I'm not sure, but from the theories I've heard the one that made most sense to me was that it was actually some sort of rudimentary balancing done at the factory to correct gross imbalance. Like I said not really 100% on that... cheers Jacob |

From memory 850 cranks had more pronounced counterweights, but this shape was in the forging. If there is evidence of bits machined off flat to make the webs triangular (as in a wedged 1275 crank) then yeah it's been wedged by somebody since manufacture. Factory balancing was a quick bump against a big grinding wheel, usually on 1 web only. |

I wedged it on my trusty Hafco HM30 mill/drill at home, took me nearly 6 friggin hours! 
Then I cleaned it up on the belt linisher at work, and GR balanced it. Looks pretty good for a $50 barn find crank don't it. It's a 12G1505 that's now been stroked 3.0mm (to 84.33) and bearings are still std/std. |
