I'm trying to tune my new 1275 bit having no luck. Originally it was due to the needle being too lean but I've put a richer needle in and it won't run nicely without being too rich .. Correct needle is on the way I'm assuming it's just that? I'm just trouble shooting because even with perfect timing it won't really rev nice without a few pops or alot of smoke ( black fuel smoke ) and if I lean out the mixture screw the car stalls or won't rev

Cheers

Sounds like it's an HIF.... progress = more things to go wrong, or hook up incorrectly!

Okay I have been down this road.

If its newly installed after being in sotroge for a while, you can almost count on the "O" on the choke device hardeniong and cracking. The choke is like a motor bike type with a twist turn tap arrangement.

With the O ring stuffed it just sucks raw unmetered fuel and if you getting black smoke at all revs and a bitter almost stinging the eyes smell then I bet thats what it is.

Midel has kits for the HIF series and its a fairly easy fix.

bit of an update..

changed to a leaner needle and got it running better.. still not great but ive driven it long distance which gave me some time to think about what the symptoms are if nothing else..

up the gears first.. in first gear its ok.. slight hint of a miss but not too bad... 2nd gear is similar but you start to get some popping (not really the word i like to use but i cant explain it on here.. ) up to about 2800 rpm then it comes ok and get up to 4000 pretty well.. 3rd gear is a similar story but with popping (at all throttle posistions bar about 5% which its smooth as) and 4th is the same.. it has no speed issues.. i can get it up to 100 pretty easily.. it just sounds a bit shittay...

it seems that after a run like that, when i stop at the lights for example.. the popping gets worse in all the gears.. basically it like 3rd gear in 1st etc..

sorry about my explaination but ive got no idea.. (btw its not the choke rubber i checked it and all is good (thanks mike) choke out makes the car stall..) taking the vacum advance pipe off makes the revs rise? timing (with the pipe off at 1000 rpm) is set at 12ish degrees..

again sorry guys.. i wish i wasnt such a retard that i could work it out for myself but yeah...

Still getting back smoke or is that solved now you changed the needle and leaned up the mixture?

Are the plugs really black and sooty or are they grey with a bit of white here and there?

Points or elec dizzy? Coil in good shape?

cheers

Sean

Are you sure you havn't got one of the following
a. A dying high tension lead
b. A crook spark plug
c. A tappet only half opening or a sticking valve
d. Badly set points ???

alot less smoke now.. i think the needle is still a bit rich but ive never had a car that ran spot on and they all drove great...

the plugs (well i changed them today but the ones that came out) were a bit sooty but had a browney white on the tip

its an electronic dissy so no points.. um its a new cap.. the only thing that isnt new are the leads but i put the timing light on all of them and got a flash back from them..

ive set the valve clearences.. so i dont know what else to do..

So there is still some black smoke? If so keep leaning it out and see how you go. As you mention the removal of the vac adv increases engine speed, that also points to too much fuel (the piston lifting pin on the HS series is great for testing like that)

cheers

I'll say i havent read to much of whats been posted, but a HIF44 that i looked at once had a vent blocked off. With this vent blocked off the fuel bowl would build to much pressure from the electric fuel pump and fuel would trickle into the inlet. Unblocking the vent solved all our problems which sound similar to yours.

So my question to you is have you blocked a vent thinking it sucks air?

it was unblocked, linked up to the crank case breather and now its blocked off with a bit of pipe.. it seems to run better with it blocked :? i hate cars

edit : have you got a photo of your engine bay?

Nope sorry, this was a customers car. The only thing i can suggest in my line of thought, is with the vent blocked, if you have an electric fuel pump, with the pump running does fuel pour out of the jet?

One thing I think maybe wrong with your HIF44. Passenger side of the card and closest to you is the breather, which I connecte to a breather on the engine (tapetet cover) for me the pipe behind it on the Hif 44 is he over flow for the Fuel bowl
