Post subject:  brake disc thicknesses

Does anyone know if the metro solid discs are the same thickness as the standard 8.4" ones?

The reason I ask is because I want to bolt some metro 4 pot calipers onto a standard 8.4" setup. Will this be a straight swap with the old ones or do I need to change the discs, drive flanges etc. too?

I want to check before I buy the parts so any help would be great.

If there is a spacer in the metro caliper and you can remove that you may be able to use them otherwise they are too wide to use on a non-vented disc.

The standard Metro Soild Disc Thickness is 0.370" or 9.6 mm in new money.

There seem to be two types of metro caliper, one with a spacer and an earlier one without (See this link).

I would be very caution about splitting a caliper and discarding the spacer (if that's the type you have) as the join needs to be hydraulically secure, i.e. no leaks.

A better idea would be to fit the vented disks as they're more fade resistant and (figuratively) cooler. If you have the calipers without the spacer, this is what you'll have to do.

You'll also need a Goodridge metro brake kit from Minispares or similar, or a kit developed in Wellington which you can see in the photo below. The Goodridge kit uses a small line to link both sets of pistons; the kit I bought has a small block which does the same thing without being overly complex.

You will also need a special set of bolts to bolt the caliper to the hubs, from Minispares etc. The shank is metric but the thread is imperial. They're not expensive and minisport.co.uk will have them on your doorstep in days.

I'm not sure if you will need Metro drive flanges. I have and you need to grind off the metro wheel locating lugs.

I just fitted my disks this afternoon. The supplier only had Brembo ones, which were about NZ$120 each.

I'm not sure, but I think the metro rotors might be slightly larger, but it's really hard to figure out whether or not it's an issue

metro rotor:

conversion kit: - no mention of which rotor to use, I'd ask minispares directly

I have a pair of non-vented metro calipers I bought by mistake - dunno if I'll use them...

The standard Metro one is 8.35" or 213 mm in new money. The 8.4" Mini / Moke ones go on OK, that what I fitted to my Metro.

Thanks alot for the replies.

OK sounds like they should fit ok. All I need to do is buy the calipers and get the right bolts for them, then sort the hoses out.

Angusdog- I like that setup. Running the single hose and block, much neater than the two hose setup ad probably a lot safer than the drillng between chambers that some have done. Did you get that made up yourself or are they available from retail? Can I ask what you paid?

From memory it's NZ$185 including the hoses, washers etc. It has to meet the stringent requirements in NZ for braided lines etc (swaged fittings rather than screw on, for example). They're made locally and sold through PD Automotive. PM me if you want contact details or I can buy them for you & post them. The Goodridge kit is about the same price but not nearly as neat.

That part about the difference between vented and nonvented always confused me, but I think the penny just dropped.

MiniSpares etc. sell a special drive flange to go with vented rotors which appears to be taller than the non-vented type. I assume this is to move the wheel further out to allow for the extra thickness of the caliper. If you're not using vented rotors, then a normal 8.4" mini flange should be OK

minispares - 'standard'

minispares - 'vented'

Yeah I noticed that. I wonder if the CV's used would have a longer splined section on them to account for this?

Probably just have a recessed nut, but ive not looked at them.

Yes, the drive flanges do sit the wheel further out (but not by much) for the vented set up. The CV is the sames .
