Ok here it is, put my fuel tank back in after welding the boot floor, had a tiny bit of fuel in it so I started the motor. Tons of black smoke came out of the exhaust untill it ran out of petrol. Do you think that this was dirty old fuel burning (would it cause black smoke?). It never did this before the tank was removed.. Possible that dust etc got into the tank when it was out and standing in the garage. |

I am no expert but wouldn't the filter pick up large particulate matter like that? I would check the filter for evidence of such. In regards to old fuel, I think you would find that in a small fuel tank you don't get old fuel. It circulates around fairly well in there. Any addative that may settle on the bottom of the tank may cause the smoke but unlikely. Anybody correct me if i am wrong (my first attemp at giving advice on this forum) |

agree with 68matic black smoke sometime means too rich a fule mix....or it could just be because the car was sitting for a while how long was the tank out for???i no when i go away for say a week when i get back and start the car it can blow smoke but then it disapears.take it for a good drive and then see what it does. |

Follow the fuel line from your carby. The filter will most likely be a plastic cylinder shaped item sitting in line no more than 30 cm from your carby. I use clear ones so i can check the element and make sure my fuel pump works. |
