Hi everyone. I am collecting a nicely restored clubman van shell from a private seller on the weekend, and it is not a rolling-shell, only the front subframe is in. I need some advice on the best way to secure the shell to the trailer (a U-haul car carrier with solid floor) without damaging the very good paintwork. My initial thoughts was a strap over the door sill area to secure the front half, but what about the rear? The rear glass and doors are in, maybe secure something to the damper/shockie mounts and then a strap? I'd also be interested to hear what people have used on the tray to prevent any damage to the bottom of the car from it sitting on bare metal tray, I thought some old tyres might be the go? cheers Jacob |

you can always sit it on a few blankets/cardboard. use blankets under your straps so you don't scratch the paintwork too. be careful of over-tightening them and bending anything. you can go up through the suspension towers at the front then across to the other tower and back down. wont touch the actual shell just the sub frame. as for the back not so sure. over the top then a long strap around the back from the front qtrs? if you have straps with single hooks on them you can put them up trhough where the shock mounts or put a eyelet bolt up through them and strap to that. |

Use something solid like a wooden pallet, cardboard, blanket between the body and the trailer. If you use something soft like tyres then you won't be able to tie it down solid enough to stop it bouncing around the tray. |

Panel beaters tilt truck transported my stripped shell on the old mattress that it had been sitting on when it was on it's side...just sat it straight on the single mattress with ratchet strap through the door opening part of the floor and a ropes tying the front subby to both sides of the tray, traveled approx 25klm of winding country roads without a problem...and no bounce that using tyres causes Just make sure to use plenty of padding and protection on the tie down points to protect the paint from any rub |

Thanks for all the tips so far, glad I asked 
Good pickup on the tyres, hadn't thought about the bouncing around problem, and I have some old plywood lined pallets here that sound perfect for the job. Seems like the best way for the back is via the shock mounts, shame the PO didn't around to getting the rear subframe in, would have made it easier.

I've moved a bare van shell a few times now. I sat it on a few planks of wood. A thick rope through the rear shock mounts. At the front, through the tie bar mounts to the winch. Caleb |

Just done this recently. Not really an issue tying down - more an issue lifting up. To tie down I had one webbing strap from trailer, through rear windows and back to trailer. Some soft sheets under strap - that ain't going anywhere. Underneath I had some cardboard to protect the bottom. Lifting it: 1. 4 of your mates and lift it in 
2. strap round car and forklift or engine crane. Again protect with soft sheet. 3. Pallet would work well. Good luck. |
