Post subject:  Camshaft choice?

Hi everyone,

in the process of an engine build and have been reading detailed information with regards to the current camshaft fitted to this engine.

the engine is a 1216cc (1100 with hillman imp pistons) with flat top pistons and with the 12G295 head it should have around 10:1 compression (i will calculate exactly when i get the head). i will be using the standard A+ rockers and a 1.5" SU to start with, upgrading to a larger carb/manifold setup within 6-12 months.

the head has large valves with unleaded seats but is not ported.

the current camshaft is a 731 grind of which i have been reading all about in both david vizards books, and on the internet.

the feedback i am getting is that this cam is quite old and i dont feel this will take advantage of the engine build i am putting together.

my question is for everyone, which cam would you suggest?

the car is a daily driver but doesnt do a massive amount of stop start so a lumpy idle is fine as long as it is driveable from 1500rpmish.

i have had quite a few cars in the past with lumpy cams, and i dont mind them as long as they are not to crazy.

i dont plan on reving the engine higher than 6500rpm as the bottom end is not super strong and it wont be raced.

i was thinking the 266 or 276 megadyne cam. maybe a 286 if that wasnt to undriveable for the road.

i would like some feedback with regards to who has what cams and what they are like in traffic and general driveability etc etc.

i dont want to spend big money, knowing that the bigger the cam, the more other parts around it require upgrading, followers, pushrods etc. i didnt really want to go crazy with it, just take advantage of what i have while keeping costs and driveability realistic.

i have come to the conclusion this cam is not really suited to this engine and while i have it in a build i might as well spend the money and get a better camshaft.

cheers

The 731 is a bit outdated but seems ok in 1100s.

Being you have the long stroke and extra capacity, you can probably get away with something like the 276 and it would still be pretty smooth.

A 295 with just bigger valves slipped in without any work to make use of them pretty much flows like a normal 295 "with a little extra", so that will help tame a lumpier cam.

For the road I usually select a cam I think I'd like then go one level "tamer" so I know that I will get good traffic manners.

cheers

personal experiencing 1098 +60 202 head and a HIF44 carb Diff is 3.44 which is a little short but good for highways. In saying this it has a RE13 cam and is a daily drive in daily traffic and has traveled from the west to the city up Parramatta road and back. Lumpy I love he sound of it.
We have just put together a 998 block and a 1098 crank & 3.64 diff but with GR 83 cam which is a little tamer and come on earlier but assured it has the nice cam lump also.
can only advice the difference once the last engine is all together

I'm also using a 266 in a 1330. I am pretty happy with it. It idles well and pulls good at most revs around town. Very Zippy little motor.

yeh from the feedback i am getting and from what i have seen on youtube and on the internet, the 266 is a pretty mild lumpy cam.

the 276 and 286 are quite a bit lumpier for a daily driver.

i would like to hear some of these in the flesh to understand exactly how lumpy they are, of course that would be different in every engine but just to get a idea of what they are like.

thanks for your feedback guys.

i am a big fan of the 731 in a smallblock, it was good on the road and good on the track and good inbetween.

and there are plenty of modern re-makes to choose from

Shopping for a camshaft, i noticed a few australian manufactured cams are available.

has anyone had any experience with camtech cams or ivan tighe cams?

should i stick to a kent cam or should i look at kits like swifttune or piper camshafts?

a kit may suit me better as i do require a duplex timing chain kit, oil pump etc so that may be right up my alley.

I wore out a Camtech 619 (aka VP3) in about 45000 miles. 3 lobes had lost 1/2 their height from wear.
It was good until it wore out...
I'd stay away from pointy lobe cams if you expect them to last.

I like Russell Engineering's cams- they have a nice big nose radius, don't seem to wear, and go better than most others too.
I would go for his RE13 grind in your motor.
If you want more bottom end and midrange torque and use no more than 6500 rpm, I'd go for his new RE83.

We had a Wade/Ivan Tighe 104 (same grind) in my wife's Cooper S replica (1293 motor, twin HS4s)- it was a good all round cam for traffic but the top end wasn't exceptional, even with 1.5 rockers on. It made 59.4HP ATW last dyno day.
