Post subject:  Rover Engine Oil

Hi All,
Not sure if this has been asked before but should there by any specific oil I am to get for a 1995 spi rover. Just wondred whether it should be anything specific since it is injected, could the oil be something I could also use in my wifes car which is a 2002 BINI, many thanks in advance.

The cars would be best run on their own oils.
The rover may be injected but at the end of the day it's still a dinosaur of an engine that wants a good 20/50 mineral oil. In the UK they recommend semi-synthetic 10w40 for those engine but it's far colder over there so not necessary.

The bini on the other hand will probably run fully synthetic 5w30 or something silly. Fully synthetic apparently gives it more life so BMW only have to change it once a year.
Check your service manual for the MINI, yours might be different to the S stuff.

I use Penrite HPRGAS 10 10W-50 oil in my 94 spi auto engine,

change the filter when you change the oil

I change both every 3,000 k

Good point to change filter, but don't forget to take the Earth Magnets off the outside before you throw them out.

Just changed my oil and filter and curiosity got the better of me, I drained the oil out of the car and emptied the filter, checked the magnetic end on the sump plug and it was as clean as a whistle.

Got to work and cut the old filter in half and to my surprise, stuk to the inside wall of the filter on 4 seperate locatons was a small amount of engine swarf, which is normally picked up by the tip of the sump plug.

So the Earth magnets work a treat, highly recommend the use to all who want to protect the inside of our Dinosaur engines...???

And my oil of choice, K Mart KMX, 20 W 50, and change it every 3,000K's or twice a year, which ever comes first. Last change was at 900K's right on the 6 month time limit..

I know its a waste but thats the privelige of owning a Mid Life cricis toy...LOL...  :? :? 8)

even if its a SPI Mini KMX is the Best Value for Money engine oil and perfect for the Australian conditions. Shame I spilt 2 liters or so of it on the garage floor this afternoon priming the rebuilt engine today

I use to run Penrite HPR30 and the thicker HPR40 in summer.

I use to daily commute (120km round trip) in my UK spec SPi (no aircon). Changed the oil around 10,000km (about every 3 months). I use to use the HPR40 in summer because I liked the comfort of knowing it wouldn't thin down quite as much when sitting idling or crawling along with the sump a few inches over the hot asphalt.

At the time someone drove out in front of me and shortened the poor thing, it had done 130,000km and was only getting close to the "Add Oil" mark on the dipstick by the time it was up to the next 10,000km change.

forgot to mention... the one problem was that because the SPi was continually (re-)tuning so efficiently was that the lack of unburnt fuel being mixed with the oil meant that it took 3,000 to discolour the oil enough to make it easy to read on the stick  This is all based on the more sedate communing - spirited weekend driving was a little different, using a bit more oil and discolouring it earlier.

What he said, except for the shortening thing.

Use which ever you prefer from these three. Kmart kmx, castrol edge 25w50 or penrite hpr30.
