Post subject:  Civic & Pulsar Motor in Mni

Talking to Shanon's Insurance today to change my policy and got chatting about Mini. He was in Melbourne had just inspected a Min which was 6 Years in the Build and it was a Pulsar GTI-R all wheel drive motor driving all wheels in the Mini & Rego'd  Brilliant in every aspect of a the car 8)
now I believe these were a 2Liter motor

Also last week he insured a Vtec from a Civic in a Mini also

I did try and find out more info from him...(very subtley) but he would not would not play

Anyone know of these Minis  I know the possible Vtec but not the GTI

I did find it crazy what they would insure engine conversions. I phoned up probably a year ago to ask about my starlet mini and they were prepared to have it insured straight away. And then we talked for a while about hot hatches.
Makes you think the ad is true.

Cars lovingly restored or custom built are usually safe bets for insurance mobs.
I won't be driving my deluxe like a nut thats for sure.

GTiR's run an SR20 but they have a better flowing cylinder head compared to the general Silvia/180SX SR20. The gearboxes are pretty weak in them though...

Any gearbox will break with constant 6000rpm launches to all four wheels. They're no more susceptible to failure than any other gearbox.

The Gti-r conversion is logical. They have an entire rear end assembly that wouldn't take much fitting to a mini. Tricky Treloar and I procured one and it looked like it would fit in a clubman without much hassle. Front to back, top to bottom it wasn't that dissimilar in size to the 4efte.

Extended front you could put it in a morris.

Anyone thought about going rear engined awd? Put the whole lot in backwards, then put an idler gear in the gearbox or off the crank somewhere.
Weight distribution would be pretty brilliant and accelerate really well. Let the natural squat put the power down.

Just wouldn't be worthwhile. You would be amazed how "easy" the Gti-r conversion would be.

Just had a quick look on ebay, i think for under 2 grand you could get engine, gearbox, transfer, and rear assembly. And with a bit of fabrication on the rear assembly everything can be pulled towards the centre of the car to keep the geometry the same.

Shame you wouldnt be able to turbo it, that would be far too much fun.

Not legally no, but the turbo on those things is fairly stealth.

$2k will get you all you need.

I sold a motor and a couple of boxes for around that. I ended up giving away the tailshaft and rear end, which I was keeping to use for a front mounted, north-south Hayabusa turbo set up. Delusions of grandeur.

Ok, Ill let a female friend of mine know that. Her GTiR has seen the back of a flat bed about 3-4 times due to gearbox failure. Perhaps her heels are getting jammed on the floor mates and she is accidently holding it on the limiter as she leaves the lights on her little commute to work everyday.

And is it a stock GTiR?

I have put a clutch in a colleagues/mates GTiR early last year. He recently broke first gear and tomorrow night I am fixing it for him. Apparently, third gear is notorious for failure but I agree with JC - any gear box will break when put under extreme load repeatedly. I know my friend drives his car very hard and I am not surprised he broke it.

I really like the sr20 motor and working on them is not too bad either.

Matt
