Its called running on. Your compression ratio is high so there is a hotspot in the cylinder that is detonating the fuel that comes in instead of the spark plug. |

I know there was a big thread on it a few months back but search doesnt work atm. Leaning it off might work, but im sure the doc will be along to correct me. Im just going off a memory. |

It can be from a number of causes, some easily fix, some need a bit more work. Some causes;- Ignition too far advanced (common), Idle too high, bringing on the vacuum advance (causing same as above),' Mixture too lean, Cam timing too far retarded (worn timing chain / gears), Compression too high (but if it only recently started doing it, then this wouldn't be it), Spark Plugs too hot heat range, Cylinder head recently serviced and not de-bured following machining of the deck. Manifold Vacuum leak There just some of the more common causes that come to mind. I'd be looking at ignition timing first. Cheers |

excuse the lack of education here but i'm new to the whole fixing your car stuff...and so how exactly do i look at the timing ignition? |

This is not easily explained over the internet, and it is something that if gotten wrong, can do serious and expensive damage. So I would prefer to suggest that you take your Mini somewhere who can check it for you and ask someone to show you how. |

ok then no worries, i'll try some of the other stuff first then, like making it less lean and all that cheers |

The easiest way to check is to get a timing light and a little mirror. You need to undo one of the 7/16th nuts on the 'wok' to expose a little hole so you can see the marks on the flywheel. Hook a 12V circuit tester light to a good earth (stud on the engine block will work fine) and put the other end in contact with the negative side (dizzy side) of the coil. Turn the engine over (i.e. car in gear but not started) so that the pointer on the wok is near or after TDC. The light on the circuit tester should be ON. Push the car backwards (ONLY DO THIS ON A LEVEL SURFACE) slowly until the light goes out. The pointer on the wok should line up in between marks on the flywheel indicating how many degrees BTDC the ignition timing is at. That is all you need to do to see what your ignition timing it at. The marks on the flywheel will look like the following: TDC = 1/4 |5 = 5° BTDC |10 = 10° BTDC Keep in mind the marks on the flywheel are only in 1 position (when #1 is at TDC on the firing stroke). I have explained this method because as you didn't know how to check your timing I doubt you have a timing light. Hope that helps. |
