Post subject:  Loss of power on acceleration
Hi,

I have had a problem for quite a while where my mini loses power on acceleration. It has a 1275 running twin 1 1/4 inch SU's.

Basically, the car idles well, though once i put my foot on the gas pedal it will stall or about to stall and then the engine revs up.

Any ideas?? If it sounds like a carb issue can someone give me a run down on how best to sync both carbs.

And if there is oil in the dashpots, make sure the lid is screwed on.

Im no expert but heres my suggestions.

It may be related to an ignition issue. If you have a points type dizzy, check the points and condensor and make sure the timing is correct with a timing light.

Points and condensor are relativley cheap so are a good place to start if the carby's dont seem to be the issue for you.

definatley check both carby's mixtures and make sure they are balanced otherwise you will get some funny things going on.

check the fluid level in the dashpots, and make sure both the float levels are correct in the float bowls. If the float level is too high it can cause flooding of fuel into the engine.

otherwise it possibly could be caused by a blocked or restricted fuel filter or crap fuel.

another suggestion is, if you dont already have one, a haynes workshop manual. there are easy to use procedures to help fault find in these types of situations. very helpful.

I'd also check the plugs. Just rebuild an engine and it just would not rev properly. Took the plugs out and they were crap. change plugs and she was better than it was before...just another place to look

Mine did the same on a single carby. Check:

Dashpots
Breather
Points/timing.

I was also having some erratic running and power issues and checked the rocker clearances and found them all to be too small. Set the gaps and it was a different beastie - new electronic dizzy and it runs a dream. The dashpot is likely to be the cause though. Dashpot oil is about $10 for the right stuff from autobarn. Dont bother with ATF or another oil, buy the right one and don't overfill it.

While you are playing with the carby, it may pay to take the pots off and see if the pistons are grotty. This can also make things erratic as they won't move freely enough - this could be the cause of the delayed rise in revs and a slow return to idle..

If they are dirty get a carby cleaner spray and tidy them up. Keep the rubbish out of the engine though.
