My ID plate, like many I've seen, has lost some of the black paint. I've seen others where all the paint is gone leaving only the stamped numbers. I guess this happens from some sort of major brake fluid spill of someone stripping the engine bay.

Has anyone ever seen the black background restored. I guess it would involve some sort of screen printing.

As much as it might annoy us neat freaks I say leave it in its original aged period condition. Looks heaps better than some thing that looks faked up.

That's true, just a pity it's like that.

I'm glad its not like some I've seen that are just a bare sheet of shiny plate with stamped numbers in the middle.

you can buy reproductions, but they're not completely correct... I'd prefer having the original you've got there

Relax everyone, I intend leaving it alone. Just wondering if it had ever been done.

Just one of those things you think about when theres nothing better to think about. :)
