Axle stands are on special at the moment at Supercrap, autonovice, or Big W [ank], for around $25 pair.

OK, I only own a povvo Supercheap "trolley" jack. You know the ones - the handle that removes to lower the jack. Right, so I think i'll invest in a better jack. And also i have nothing to hold the car up (safely) while its there. Should i purchase some car ramps (and will i only need two?) or get jack stands - i freakin hate jack stands. Thanks for your input/suggestions, in anticipation of course. Big willy. |

ramps are good if you need to work under the car, but are no good if you want to work on suspension, bearings, brakes ect as you still have the wheels attached. Id go stands. |

Gets your self an axe and go and hack up the forestry trees located nearby until you find a good shaped tree for a stand get as many as you need those jacks are tuff! me gots me one also |

good quality stands mate!! My in laws have cheapies, and when the car is sitting on them, you can rock the car side to side, and the stands flex a LOT!  That's nasty!!
I have ramps......probably use them once every 2 years! They are good.....for taking up space in the shed. |

Should i get two sets? Don't they say not to have the car fully supported by jack stands or something? ALso whats some "good" brands? |

Personally I find car stands difficult to place underneath and get it properly stable. I have two sets of both, in fact stands and ramps. I also scored the bargain of a set of full drive-on tilt ramps off ebay, but haven't used them as yet. KB |

KB I scored my ramps from the side of the road, for nix!  The things people chuck out in a council clean up!

if i had the techical know how, i'd make a 4 post lift! like in miniworld that one time, i can't find it so instead you can just hear me tell you about it. but the guy had a mk3. roundie, i think cooper? i dont know. was there a mk3 cooper??? |

I would get 2 good stands, and 2 ramps as well. And a 2nd trolley jack is handy, too. I like the MVP? jack (1.9T) from K-Mart- goes just as low as the shorties, but has higher lift and more stability.

TIP ON GETTING CARS ONTO RAMPS put a plank on the angled bit, so you are driving on a smooth surface instead of the actual ramp. BUT you have to be careful in case you put the plank on the ramp wrong, and it flicks up onto the car. or the wheel stays on the board, and you cant get it out. and one time, i span the wheel up the whole length of the board (about a metre). made a nice smell and sound

Yeah so you're saying to put a plank on the drive up-py bit so it doesnt clunk along when you drive up the gaps in the ramp? Wouldnt it be really slippery then? |

I don't like ramps specialy if you have a garage floor and they just slide. I did dyno bolt them to the floor for a while then I payed $30 a set of axle stands. At least you can move them around into the spot you wont and you can work in the wheel arch's Pull motors out and work on brakes. I would not get under a car with out a trolly jack. My life is to important to trust anything else! Trolly Jack is a Mitsu 1350kgs max Lowest hight 130mm (don't forget Mini's are lower than most cars and not all will fit under) WIfe Had the NRMA "no real mechanic avalible" to change the wife wheel today and he lifter Morris and Sue push his trolly jack under
