Does the air pump serve any other purpose apart from reducing emissions? Well its supposed to reduce the emissions isn't it? Whats happens if I disconnect it, should I? The car is all original and untouched engine. Maybe its best if I leave it..... Your comments please...

It was only fitted to 'reduce' emissions although all they really did was dilute the exhaust gases with more air. Oh well, they did meet the regulations of the time. Easiest thing to do is remove the belt. Then it's all still there and easily resurected if required, but usually the air pumps sieze up if not used for a while. |

I don't think technically it reduces the emissions, merely waters them down so its percentace relative to to the exhaust is lower.

If I disconnect it will I have an increase in power? Is the engine running any harder with in connected? |

There is no longer a requirement to keep the ADR27A emissions systems working. The petrol it was designed for is no longer available and the systems will not work as designed. If your car is totally stock I would want to leave it intact to keep the stock appearance. So I would block the pipes where they go into the head, leave the belt off the pump and block off any other bits I have forgotten. (a small ball bearing or lead sinker shoved up a rubber hose is otherwise invisible!) |

It does suck some HP from the engine but not a lot. It will run quieter without the pump

The air pump does not water down the exhaust to reduce emissions. It is to add air so that excess unburned fuel can get burned off inside the exhaust system. (and raise the exhaust temp and burn exhaust valves) If you rig them up right you can get a nice flame out the pipe!

Ok. So there is only one belt that it runs off. Removing that wont effect anything else? sorry, I havnt had a close look at it

Maybe if you rigged the windscreen washers to spray in to it, then you could get evapoative cooling

If it were me i would leave it alone while its working. Why fix fix something if its not broke. I would doubt the increase in power would be even noticeable. Just leave all connected till something goes wrong then block it up and take belt off etc thats what i would do |

It is just robbing power and doing nothing to help. This is why the Government has removed ADR27A from the books. It is a waste of time and energy to leave it in place. It costs power to turn the pump. If you wanted to create less pollution you would disconnect it. |
