Post subject:  Engine oil choice

hi everyone,

i know this is a can of worms, but i am about to run a new engine in and wanted to get everyones feedback. i will be running the runin oil for about 500-800kms.

what are your suggestions for running in oil? Brand and visocity?

what do you suggest for standard use oil after running in? Brand and viscosity?

the engine is a daily driver, freshly built. i will be using a non-friction modified oil in mineral form. no synthetics.

Thanks

 yeh. well i am the engine builder so its up to me!

I am probably going to use something like 15w40 to run in and 20w50 for normal use once its run in.

just wanted to get peoples feedback on brands etc.

does anyone use castrol edge sport or penzoil oils? i have used these in the past and found them very good with other engines.

Just to put my two bob in when I did my engine in my delux

I had a valvoline running in oil in it for 1000Kms then I changed the oil and filter and I am using penrite HPR15 which is a 15w 60 and I have been changing both every 5000Kms

I asked the same question once.

This thread may be of some help:

KMX, Doesnt taste all that bad either if your unfortunate enough to happen to drink it

I used to swear by Penrite HPR30 back in the late '90s, before they changed it to an API-SM formula.

Then I switched to what became Castrol Edge Sport, which is (still) a good oil but pricey.

Now I won't use anything but Motorpro KMX from K-mart. I tried it based on the advice given here by the Doc and GR, and my experience since has been that it's as good or better than the Castrol -- higher and more consistent oil pressure, less burnt over time and retains its "purity" for longer between changes.

At the full price of $20 per 6L it's about half the price of the Castrol, to boot.

I was wondering what circumstances would arise which would lead to a slug of KMX in the mouth... but I thought better of it

I thought it was a water leak, and the best idea at the time seemed to be taste. In hindsight there are definitely better methods.

See if that was Castrol Edge you would have thought twice before spitting it out. I'm sure they put some vanilla essence in that stuff to make it smell sweet...or its the simply the smell of olfactory cells mutating into cancerous growths.....

For the price you'd think twice about spitting, I'm sure
