Post subject: | Guess the damage!!! |
Travelling over a hour out of Alice Springs for a festival I had almost arrived when I heard squeeking noises like a mouse coming from the front. The steering wheel forced itself to the left. The whole car lurched to the left two feet almost taking me off the highway. I get to the river and start crossing the sand and then crunch and the whole car again lurched to the left almost keeping me stuck in the sand. Thought it was inner cv took them apart and put them back together. They looked fine. Had to drive 100km home with something reasonably large bouncing pretty violently around the bottom end. To summise. Motor sounds fine standing still. Can still get through all the gears. So what the he'll have I done to the diff. At a guess have I mashed one of this small gears inside the the hub that bolts onto the crown. |

yep, broken spider gear... and now that you've driven the engine that far, eveything else will be rooted too - well done |

It didn't sound crunchy bad all the way home. I'm gathering a tooth is bouncing around inside. I have half a dozen earth magnets on the filter. I have a spare diff. I have spare gearbox parts. As long as the top end is ok I'm in a position to repair it quite easily. Just sux being 100km in middle of nowhere where your only chance of a tow is a mate with a 4x4. |

Same happend to me last friday... http://img153.imageshack.us/img153/8990 ... haden2.jpg - doesn't look like much, but the gearbox was full with fine debriss and metal flakes...! I'd strip it down completely for inspection & cleaning. |

![]() ![]() kinda... they were new, then 12 months later I replaced the diff pin and they were still good, then 5 months after that this one shattered. Probably more like 10,000k's |

Have everything i need for a rebuild, so will take care to flush everything out completely. It seemed to run quite smoothly all the way home, excepting the piece that was bouncing around the gearbox. So im hoping theres not too much damage. And still have normal oil pressure, car still runs fine standing still. I havent driven it since. |
