Does anyone know what the Victorian roadworthy requirements are in regards to play in the top steering column bush is?

I have ~ 1/8" play at the steering wheel.

How hard is it to replace this bush?

the requirement is no play at all - how much is acceptable depends on your roadworthier, how they feel on the day, and the general impression they get from you and your car. If everything else is good, then you might get away with it...

Thanks Simon. I'll order a top bush then so there is no arguments. Have you replaced one before, if so how hard is it to do?

Cheers

Jim

you'll need to take the shroud off and the indicator stalk, undo the steering wheel hub nut and remove the wheel. The you should be able to knock the bush up gently with a flat head screwdriver and a hammer. It should just slide up off the column.

When putting the new one on i like to put a bit of moly grease on the inside so the bush lasts a bit longer.

They aren't hard to do. Check your bottom one while your at it. If there is play in the top, there is probably play in the bottom.

Don't buy the red type, they are crap and do not fit properly. Get the white one like the original.

just a quick warning. i replaced mine recently and found the previous owner had glued the bush in. not only that but it wasnt even the right bush. on top of that the lower bush had been butchered aswell.

i ended up having to remove the whole column and the job took me 4 hours in total.

all i am suggesting is allow plenty of time for these sorts of jobs, just in case.

good luck 8)
